Ultimate 80s Covers: Volume 1

Posted Mon May 19, 2008 5:41pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

I’m headed on vacation next month to beautiful Hilton Head island on the coast of South Carolina, but I’ll continue to do playlists, because music is never work.

As I was daydreaming about going on my vacation today I remembered this playlist. I put it together at a coffee house the last time I was in Hilton Head back in December of 2006. Since the place where we stay doesn’t have an Internet connection I can sometimes be found in local cafes that offer free WiFi.

This list was inspired as I sat in a Sea Pines coffee shop that happened to be playing all 80s songs in the background.

I was a teenager in the 80s, so I’m a sucker for anything from said decade. I've spent a lot of time collecting quality cover versions of popular 80s songs, so if you love the 80s as much as I do, you'll get a kick out of many of the remakes in this playlist.

I’m sure this list can be improved and built upon, so I’ve labeled it “Volume 1“. I’ll do new volumes in the future, and when I get to #5 or #6, I’ll pick only the very best songs from each to create the ultimate 80s covers playlist.

So please let me know which of these tracks you feel are worthy of the final cut.

Scheeze, the poor level of singing and musicianship on some of these songs...Gads, no wonder they copy older music. they have no talent or originality

3. Nic -
i haven't heard most of these covers. i'm just glad you didn't include the covers of "love song" or "in your eyes" because they are the WORST 80's covers EVER

4. BartB -
Van Halen 1984..

5. looloo -
Man...that Atari's remake of Boys of Summer...I was so f'n sick of that song and I still don't want to listen to it...most of these remakes I've heard and they're good but I still like the original ones too...

6. theunknowncommenter -
OK. You had a version of "Cars" by an artist I have never heard of,yet a cover of a song I have yet to hear by Fear Factory? Their version of "Cars" wasn't cool enough to make the list? Or is it because Gary NUMAN (this is the correct spelling, dweeb!) is singing some lines on it that it wasn't included?

7. Ashley B -
Blondie's cover of "The tide is high" was awesome, enough to make it a #1 hit and the #10 song of 1981. Atomic kitten re did it and it went to #1 in the Uk.

Until December did a cover of Blondie's #1 smash "Call Me" in the 80's, it was very GOTH.

8. Gia -
The Ataris' version of "The Boys Of Summer" I actually find to be decent. Gets me in the "summer mood"

9. david a -
What about System of a Down's cover of "Metro"? I dont even know who sang the original. Heart, Blondie?

10. Stephanie -
oooo! "Blue Monday" (org Joy Division) covered by Orgy should be on this list! sad that this single made them a hit and no recognitions is really given to Joy Division. Other 80's covers others might enjoy:

"metal" cover by NIN (org. Gary Numan), and "World In My Eyes"(org Depeche Mode) was perfectly covered by The Cure, "How Soon Is Now"(org The Smiths) covered by Snake River Consipiracy.

AP - There's something about the honeyed sweetness of Joseph Calleja's voice that seems to evoke memories of a golden age, as if this young tenor carried within his vocal cords a secret passed down from bygone generation… More »
