Metal Death Scenarios

Posted Mon Feb 18, 2008 5:53pm PST by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

Today we offer yet another compilation focused on death. But for this death-centered playlist, we decided to go with heavy metal. After all, it’s the only genre that has a subgenre named in honor of the subject, Death Metal.

I’ve trolled the evil back alleys of Yahoo Music searching for metal songs, but not just about death, that would be too easy. This list features 17 songs that highlight some of the most metal ways to die.  From brutal mutilation, disease, crucifixion and stabbing to being impaled on stakes and even being chopped in half. These songs are not for the squeamish.

When I was younger I went through a metal phase, and although it’s far from the top of my list today, I still love to wade through the metal genres looking for guitar solos and over-the-top gimmicks. How evil is so attractive to youth never ceases to amaze me. Ozzy Osbourne’s bat-biting and upside down cross imagery helped sell at least 3 of his records to me when I was in high school. However, in the world of metal, Ozzy is as tame a Pat Boone. I would never spend money on a hardcore metal album today, but with my music subscription I can become one with the darkness whenever I wish.

Although I know most of you won’t actually listen to this playlist in full, I bet you listen to at least one track, and view some album covers for the sake of morbid curiosity alone. And if you’re a metal fan, you won’t find any glam or pop metal here.
