A Grateful Dead Family Tree Playlist

Posted Fri Jul 17, 2009 7:54pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

I've always enjoyed the Grateful Dead, but I'm not what you would call a "deadhead". The closest I came was when I dated a serious Grateful Dead fan during college. She dragged me to go to an Atlanta show and I will be forever grateful. I had enjoyed the Dead before this show, but once I saw them live my opinion turned much more positive. It was not an epiphany that made me want to sell all of my material possessions and live a simple life selling hemp bracelets at Rainbow gatherings, but it did open my eyes to the very special musical bond between members of the band. Jerry Garcia's guitar style is so recognizable all you need to hear is a single note to know it's him, and although the individual vocal parts of each member are nothing too exciting, when they're put together it all fits perfectly. Even though there's superb musicianship to be found in the Grateful Dead, I have always felt that their key contribution was their powerful dynamics. This is a band that was deeply connected with the music -- not just on an individual level, but collectively. When you get a group of talented musicians all feeling the same thing and expressing it through their instruments in synch, the results can be truly electrifying for the audience. This is what made the Dead great. It's what made people give up their lives in order to follow the band full time.

There have been many musicians who've been members of the Grateful Dead over the decades. Many of them, as you know, are no longer with us. This playlist examines the Grateful Dead family tree with songs released by members as solo artists and through other projects. I think you'll find a connected vibe running throughout.

Shut up about that stupid pedophile. Jerry Garcia meant more to music than Michael Jackson could have ever dreamed of. At least Jerry wrote and played his own music. Show me a song Michael Jackson wrote and played. He could sing and dance, who cares, I promise, he wasn't that great.

2. Jeannie -
I've been a Deadhead since The late 60's when I first heard Workingman's Dead. The loss of Jerry Garcia literally left us bereft unto numbness. Living in San Francisco, the nights at Fillmore and the Cow Palace are stamped eternally into my DNA. GOOD OLD GRATEFUL DEAD. There was nothing like them and there will never be again. Phil and Bobby are as great as ever, just different. The Dead lives! but It lives inside us.
Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile.

3. Jeannie -
Oh Lord, I forgot to add Mickey Hart. A learned musicologist and just genius, genius.

4. Michael -
Wow, anyone mentioning Michael Jackson in a Dead blog or posting is completely off track! I have been a deadhead for years, although my long hair has been cut off for employment reasons ( Which is completely society's bogus crap ) I will always love the dead, a music like no other. I loved the dead and Allman Brothers, Zepplin, Jefferson Starship, BUT the Dead and ONLY the dead had a unique sound, Robert the Radish says it best in this article, the dead had (and still does) a unique bond, a mellow flow throughout all members of the band.
Singleonline049, you are way off base even mentioning Michael Jackson in this post, 2 completely different time frames and totally different music styles!
Long live Jerry Garcia, Long live PIGPEN

So, I'm that girl. The one that discovered the Dead at 14-15 years old, fell in love with the music, sold burritos at the shows for money to the next one, had the time of my life, or roughly five years of it, met great people, danced all the time, saw people dancing in the cow palace like a flood of different colors under the lights....everyone danced, not some of them but everyone. I have to add this is one of the greatest experiences of my life. It has shaped me as an adult, and keeps me grounded with my children now at 32. Forever will I have that feeling when I listen to the dead. Growing up in California really was an incredible childhood full of experience that is only available there. I will never regret it, down to the tattoo that remains in my stomach, that was put there so I would never forget the time in my life when I was completely carefree.....:) Sorry so nostalgic, but if you did read Robert Radish explains it best. She dragged me to the show and I was forever grateful;

I'd have to include anything from Mickey Hart's magnificent DIGA RHYTHM BAND album, as well as "The Wall Song" from GRAHAM NASH/DAVID CROSBY, which features Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann.
And as Michael says, long live Pigpen and Captain Trips!

9. DAVEY -
Michael jackson doesn't belong on a grateful dead page, but then again least the children are safe. I got into the dead in 72 after doing my 1st tab of acid and saw the dark star it was what a long strange trip it was. so many shows and enjoyed them all. the death of jerry was sad for all of us, but yet the music never stops down the road.

I have to give much respect to anybody and everybody who has had a chance to see the DEAD live and in color. I am a huge fan but was born too late and to parents that were too drug free to let me enjoy the actual experience of the shows. I do remember dropin what we considered acid (the [profane]ty stuff) and jammin out to DEAD where ever we were at. I am still learning alot and will always be learning about the DEAD movement and love to hear the stories. So I thank U one and alll.....

11. Ronson -
Excellent list, Robert!! I have enjoyed The Grateful Dead and all of their side projects for many years. Your blog is always like a breath of fresh air amid all the crap posted at Y! Music (excluding work by Kordosh, DiMartino, and O'Connor). Yes, I love The Grateful Dead.......and, I am Grateful that I am almost Dead.
