Classic Redneck Anthems: Volume 1

Posted Sun Jun 7, 2009 5:37pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

There is a lot of opinion about where the term "redneck" came from. Some believe it comes from the sunburned necks of poor farm people who worked the fields all day. Others believe the name comes from the red cloth that Scottish Presbyterians wore around their necks to signify a rejection of the Church of England, and still others believe it comes from red bandannas that West Virginian coal miners wore to show their willingness to unionize. I'll side with the famous comedian Jeff Foxworthy who defines a "redneck" as someone with "a glorious lack of sophistication."  When I hear the word "redneck" I get conflicting images. On one hand, I picture an ignorant, intolerant dufus prone to violence and alcohol abuse, but on the other hand, I picture someone who is hardworking, fun-loving and has an unyielding loyalty to family and country. The truth is, there are rednecks I would love to hang out with, but there are also rednecks who make me extremely uncomfortable. But isn't that true of just about any subculture in American society?

This playlist includes 12 redneck anthems that help provide different perspectives on the redneck ethos.

The song "John Deere Green" should be on here but than again I only recognize 5 of the groups on the list.

A few good ones, but that Gretchen Wilson tune is ear torture. I absolutely hate that song, because a club I used to go to had an employee that would play it over and over and over.....Really stupid lyrics!

If you define 'redneck' as 'a glorious lack of sophistication' i'd like to offer more suggestions (& quite possibly better):

"C*m Stains on the Pillow" - Davie Allan Coe

"You Never Even Called Me by My Name" - Coe

"My Hometown" - Charlie Robison

"Merry Christmas from the Family" - Robert Earl Keen Jr.

I think I would have picked Long Haired Country Boy by Charlie Daniels and You Never Even Called Me By My Name by D. A. Coe. Not to mention Country Folks Can Survive by Hank JR.

I am tapped out on my redneck country songs. AS for redneck rock songs.... My list is virtually unending!
