Top 10 Songs About Southern Food

Posted Mon Apr 20, 2009 7:39pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

Considering that I was raised in Scranton, PA and New England, there's no denying that I'm a bona fide Yankee. Although I'm proud of my northern culinary heritage I love southern cooking. I was introduced to southern food in a big way shortly after I moved to Charleston, SC after college. It took some time to fully adjust to the southern way of life, but one thing I adopted with lightning speed was a love of southern food. Cooking in the south has a long and diverse history and never gives a second thought to coronary health.

For this playlist I looked only for songs where the central theme is a traditional southern dish and narrowed the list down to my top 10. You'll find some dinner ideas by greats like Ray Charles, Cannonball Adderley and Bud Powell, but you'll also find great songs about southern food by artists who are not yet household names. "Fatback" is by a local musician here in North Carolina named Scoot Pittman, and if you don't listen to the whole playlist you've got to at least hear this song.

What's your favorite southern food song?

AP - There's something about the honeyed sweetness of Joseph Calleja's voice that seems to evoke memories of a golden age, as if this young tenor carried within his vocal cords a secret passed down from bygone generation… More »
