Some of Pitchfork's Best New Music: March 2009

Posted Fri Mar 27, 2009 6:08pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

I have a love/hate relationship with Pitchfork Media. The indie-leaning music review website is arguably one of the most visible and trend-setting around. And Pitchfork is a place I can usually count on to discover some great new music. In my view, their music reviews are sometimes brilliantly written, but other times they say an awful lot without really saying much of anything.

I have nothing against heady music reviews, but sometimes Pitchfork's ranting comes off as nothing more than annoying and pompous white noise. Luckily, the site uses multiple reviewers, so not all the reviews they publish fall into this category. But even if every review was aggravating, Pitchfork is still worth it's weight in gold for the exposure it gives to truly talented bands that fly under the mainstream's radar

For this playlist I compiled 10 songs that currently appear on Pitchfork.com as a "best new song" or on one of Pitchfork's "best new album" selections.

Some of Pitchfork's Best New Music - March 2009

   1. Is She There - Nodzzz

   2. Skeletons - Yeah Yeah Yeahs

   3. If I Had A Heart - Fever Ray

   4. Build Voice - Dan Deacon

   5. Beach Demon - Wavves

   6. Train Song - Feist

   7. Young Adult Friction - The Pains of Being Pure At Heart

I still hold the view that Pitchfork should shove it. More often than not, they miss the whole point of an album.

As for their choices, I can't help but say that at least 25% of their artists suck.

2. Paramour -
That's still only about two of the songs.

Yeah. Pitchfork isn't really doing it for me. Just because a song is devoid of big chords that are too "commercial," or is lacking interesting noises, or whose production is too "polished" to be good, doesn't mean that is not a good song. I don't mind Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I don't like Animal Collective at all. The rest...meh.

Deerhunter's Agoraphobia is great stuff. Some of the other tunes are pretty good too. Overall good picks Pitchfork.
