The Random Playlist Battle - Last.fm

Posted Thu Feb 26, 2009 5:09pm PST by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

Last.fm is an Internet radio site that was founded in the UK and now boasts over 21 million users. Last year it was acquired by CBS for $280 Million.

Last.fm's music recommendations become better the more you input into the system. Each user builds a profile by listening to music with a plugin that logs the music you listen to, otherwise known as scrobbling. Your listening habits can then be compared to other users logs enabling last.fm to present you with new songs.

For this playlist I entered "Andrew Bird" on the last.fm homepage and clicked the Go button. The site then streamed the songs in this playlist. I certainly can't argue with the results, the playlist is excellent.

I found it interesting that some of the artists (and even a song) were also selected by iTunes Genius.

The last.fm playlist only produced two artists I was not familiar with (Apostle of Hustle and Loney, Dear), so it wasn't the best list for music discovery, although I enjoyed the two tracks by these artists. The real accomplishment here is how every track in this 15 song list is a keeper. Last.fm may be the best choice for a perfect "one-button" radio experience when time is not readily available.

Below is the playlist last.fm generated for me followed by the playlists created by Pandora, iTunes Genius and Rhapsody Instant Playlist.

Personally, I'd take the Last.fm playlist. It seems to have the best selections.

This may make me seem like a musical neophyte, but wouldn't it have been a better idea to use a more well known band/song as your starting place? I mean, I consider myself fairly musically knowledgeable, having worked in radio for almost eight years, but I don't recognize the names of many of the bands on any of these playlists. Since I don't know anything about the bands, it is hard to make any kid of determination about the job that the playlist program did.

Personally, I find Genius to do the best job for my tastes, although I have enjoyed Pandora in the past. Yahoo's now-defunct "My Station" radio also was good.

Greg, you should probably listen to the songs, and it doesn't surprise me that someone in radio doesn't know these songs. Radio is a dead meadium after all.

4. jay -
neophyte no....just someone not very well versed. These bands are pretty big by the standards of most. Shins, Belle and Seb. ETC, they may not be on the radio, but then again most good music has surrvived outside of radio for the better part of my lifetime.

5. jay -
also you can find a hottie on...um, wait...

6. Anne -
I've found some great stuff through Last.fm. Definitely my favorite.

Greg, I dunno what you listen to, but knowing most of these (did not know Devendra and Apostles of hustle), its good music.
