Elvis Costello Covers

Posted Tue Feb 17, 2009 5:41pm PST by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

Elvis Costello's had a tremendous career in music. But his gold records and plethora of music awards are not the most impressive accomplishments he can point to. He's done what most commercially successful artists find impossibly elusive -- critical acclaim. In fact, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a critic worth his salt that dismisses the work of Elvis Costello.

The huge number of Elvis songs that have been recorded by other artists is a testament to his powerful influence on musicians across the planet. This playlist contains just 15 well-done Elvis Costello covers. And before you start hating, I understand that he did not write "Peace, Love and Understanding...", but he did make it famous, so I've included a cover version by Steve Earle that is just too good to leave out.

What's your favorite Elvis cover?

What about "Two Little Hitlers" by Todd Rundgren?

4. The Colonel -
Isn't "What's So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding" a Brinsley Schwarz cover? Their original version pre-dates EC's by 5 years.
