Top 10 Songs About The Moon

Posted Wed Feb 11, 2009 5:48pm PST by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

Two nights ago there was a full moon, and where I live it was especially stunning. It was HUGE, and bright and shining though the pine trees. The moment got me thinking about songs that have been inspired by the moon, and believe me when I say there are plenty.

The allure of the moon goes back to the beginning of human history. For thousands of years mankind had no idea what it really was, and some even worshipped it as a god. Only a dozen human beings have set foot on it.

Indeed, the pull of the moon on planet earth is more than gravitational, it has inspired many a songwriter to sing of it's mysteries. In fact, songs about the moon probably go back to the very first humans to ever write songs. Athough we will never hear those early compositions, we have thousands of modern moon songs to choose from.

This playlist includes my personal top 10 picks for the best "moon songs" ever recorded.

Well, between Robert and johnny poster #1, you covered most of the ones I had in mind.

Only

"Under A Killing Moon" by Thrice was left out, in my opinion. Great song. Very "modern" too.

5. Yahoo! Music User -
Oh, and add Moon Pulls by Mum.

6. Chris the first -
Great list. I, in particular, love the Ozzy song. It's one of my all-time favorite songs, I like playing it on my guitar.

Anyway, Here's another, modern metal, song That is a great one: "Bound by the Moon" by Devildriver.

7. John Kordosh -
What about Bob Seger's horrible "Shame on the Moon?" That was a big hit, wasn't it? I favor TMBG's "Destination Moon" myself.
