Top 10 Remade Greatest Hits

Posted Wed Jan 21, 2009 2:46pm PST by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

If you missed it, there were two big fashion news items from the Presidential inauguration. One was Michelle Obama's much-raved-about outfits, created by lesser-known fashion designers who have just had their careers launched by the first lady. The second was Aretha Franklin's massive cold weather bow-hat.

Although I have mixed feelings on the hat there is no denying that Ms. Franklin still has a set of pipes that can stop anyone dead in their tracks. Her moving rendition of "My Country Tis Of Thee" got me thinking about another cover song that she's performed perfectly. Namely, her version of Otis Redding's "Respect".

After a quick search I found a list of the world's top remade greatest hits over at the song list site Pop Culture Madness and guess what was #1?

This playlist includes the first 10 songs of the Pop Culture Madness list.

Which do you agree with and which do you think should have been in the top 10?

Top 10 Remade Greatest Hits

1. Respect- Aretha Franklin (Otis Redding)

2. Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers (Les Baxter)

3. Last Kiss - Pearl Jam (J. Frank Wilson)

Well, personally, I don't like the VH version of You Really Got Me.

As for the other ones, they are okay.

And while Squirrel Bait's cover of Tape from California was never a "hit" it is such a great one.

I am also surprised that Marylin Manson's take on "Sweet Dream (Are Made of This)" wasn't here.

2. john -
Surprised Hendrix's version of 'All Along the Watchtower" and Johnny Cash's "Hurt" aren't on there.

3. DUDE -
No disrespect to D33PPURPLE....Van Halen's cover of "Ypu Really Got Me" really ROCKS!

4. Yahoo! Music User -
Nah, I agree with Deep. The Kinks version is superior to the VH cover.

All good choices I suppose, tho I never liked Pearl Jam's "Last Kiss" - but was never big on the original neither. And what about Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife"? His was best known.
Some missing:
"I Shot the Sheriff" - Eric Clapton (Bob Marley)
"All Along the Wathtower - Jimi Hendrix (Bob Dylan)
"Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" - Elton John (the Beatles)

Well zjm, you are IN LUCK. For your information, your spam is generic, stupid, and boring. You recently signed to bot a spam, but realize your time was wasted. And no, I'd rather not talk to a bot with a name like Genericscreenname2000.

Spoof aside, some good songs I forgot about. Definately Hendrixes rendiition of "All Along the Watchtower" is awesome. And DUDE, no offense taken.

Hey out there!! I like (though some of them are not hit hits):
Johnny Cash's "Hurt" (Originally from Nine Inch Nails)
Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" (Gloria Jones)
Ike and Tina's "Proud Mary" (Creedance Clearwater Revival)
Speaking of Tina: Her version of "Let's Stay Together" (Al Green)
Sinead O'Connor: "Nothing Compares To You" (Prince)
I'll stop now!!!
Peace to all,
crc

I think these covers should have their own Top Ten, too:

1. "Bohemian Rhapsody"-Grey DeLisle (Queen)

3. "Feelings"-The Offspring (Morris Albert)
4. "Change Gonna Come"-Otis Redding (Sam Cooke)
5. "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue"-Them (Bob Dylan)
6. "Little Wing"-Derek and The Dominoes (Jimi Hendrix)
7. "Stranded In The Jungle"-New York Dolls (The Cadets)
8. "Substitute"-The Sex Pistols (The Who)
9. "Without You"-Nilsson (Badfinger)
10."St. Louis Blues"-The Flamin' Groovies (W.C.Handy)

9. Yahoo! Music User -
"Higher Ground"--RHCP ( Stevie Wonder)

10. Chris the first -
What about Type O Negative's cover of "Summer Breese"(Seals & Croft), It probably the best cover I've ever heard. And also, "Hey Joe"(Billy Roberts) covered by Jimi Hendrix

11. Yahoo! Music User -
even though it's more recent i think It's My Life by No Doubt originally by Talk Talk should have been on there. it's one of the best covers in recent years in my opinion.

12. Timothy -
Fancy - Reba McEntire
Heart Of The Matter - India.Arie

13. Jane -

Last Kiss is the sound of Pearl Jam losing all credibility. That song is a joke.
