Songs That Sample “Get Up, Get into It, Get Involved” by James Brown

getup.jpgThe Godfather of Soul, James Brown, is also the Grandfather of Hip-Hop. He is without any doubt, the most sampled artist in music. His entrancing beats and infectious personality were a match made in heaven for hip-hop producers who have cut his work up and spit it back out into a completely new American-born art form.

James Brown’s high-powered shrieks, tightly defined horns, and downright stank-ass funkiness are bricks in the foundation upon which hip-hop was constructed. Without these, the house would not have become what it is today, if it was built at all. The list of James Brown songs that have been sampled is long indeed.

For this playlist we start with a James Brown original “Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved” from his 1986 compilation In The Jungle Groove, which was voted number 330 of the top 500 greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. This 7 minute and 5 second funkfest features signature James Brown repetition that is perfect for the hip-hop DJ. It also includes the famous lyrics, “Hit Me…Two Times.. common… do it” and  ”Get on up…”

The original is followed by 12 more tracks that sample some part of “Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved” by hip-hop artists like Public Enemy, Leaders of The New School, Beastie Boys, Heavy D, 2 Live Crew and more. The playlist also includes some non hip-hop tracks that sample the song.
