Male Indie Singer-Songwriters: Acoustic

Posted Fri Jan 25, 2008 5:15pm PST by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

Although I love all genres of music, and usually pick what I listen to based on my mood, I find that lower-key music wins a good chunk of the time. In addition, I’m love acoustic guitar. I’ve always loved the instrument since I first heard Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan and Crosby, Stills & Nash way back in high school.

I put this playlist together for myself. It features new-ish male indie singer-songwriters and acoustic guitars. I have no preference of male over female vocalists, but honing it further made sense to me, so keep an eye out for the female version to come.

Although you could certainly argue that not all of the artists in this list could be considered “indie”, especially Kevin Devine, Ray Lamontagne, Damien Rice and Ryan Adams; I find that their music fits like a glove with artists like Elliot Smith, M. Ward, Badly Drawn Boy and Iron & Wine. I’ve taken care to include only significant tracks that feature the beauty of a good voice and an acoustic guitar.

In the end, this playlist contains 20 tracks that are not only personal favorites, but fit together into a cohesive 1 hour and 11 minute program.

The Playlist:

1. Ain't No Reason - Brett Dennen

2. Brooklyn Boy - Kevin Devine

3. Heartbeats - Jose Gonzalez

4. John Wayne Gacy, Jr. - Sufjan Stevens

5. Only You - Joshua Radin

6. Naked As We Came - Iron & Wine

7. Angeles - Elliott Smith

8. White Center - Damien Jurado

9. Poison Cup - M. Ward

10. It's The Nighttime - Josh Rouse

11. Girl In The War - Josh Ritter

12. In The Sun - Joseph Arthur

13. Fewer Words - Badly Drawn Boy

14. The Wind that Blew My Heart Away - Fruit Bats

Excellent playlist Robert!
Ben Kweller, Rufus Wainright, Josh Ritter...
Those are some of my favorite artists.

I have a suggestion for your female indie singer-songwriter list. I just discovered an artist (on Pandora Radio) named Shannon Hurley. Her song "Sunrise" was so beautiful..and I had to buy the whole album ("Ready to Wake Up"). Just when you think the songs couldn't get any better, each song that follows is even more beautiful. Check this girl out!
Here's her link:

Thanks,

the worst thing about singer songwriters acoustic folk freaks are their friends that think they have talent and tell you to check out their myspace page.

the next big thing is always some criminally overlooked person known only in the world of myspace.

You might want to check out Lindsay D'arcy: he's in Prague, cz and writes acoustic songs -www.lindsaydarcy.com, a bit of an anomaly but worth a listen if you appreciate lyrics and voice.
