Lil Wayne: Decoded

Posted Mon Dec 10, 2007 5:02pm PST by Brandon Perkins in The URB Blog

Ever feel like the wealth of knowledge contained in hip-hop songs is going way over your head? That the vernacular is just a bit out of your grasp? That the references are just beyond your immediate reach? Well, online translations tend to be condescending at best and academically inept at worst. They say a picture is worth 1000 words, but what about the copious information floating on the Internet? What's that worth, huh? It's time to investigate the lyrics of some of 2007's best songs, starting with Lil Wayne's drug opus "I Feel Like Dying." Check the links to check into the knowledge bank.

"I am sittin' on the clouds
I got smoke coming from my seat
I can play basketball with the moon
I got the whole world at my feet
Playin' touch football on Marijuana Street
Or in a marijuana field
You are so beneath my cleats
Get high, so high that I feel like lying
Down in a cigar
Roll me up and smoke me cause
I feel like dying

[2x]Only once the drugs are done
That I feel like dying, I feel like dying

Swimming laps around a bottle of Louis The 13th
Jumping off of a mountain into a sea of Codeine
I'm at the top of the top but still I climb
And if I should ever fall, the ground will then turn to wine
Pop, Pop, I feel like flying, then I feel like frying, then I feel like dying

[2x] Only once the drugs are done
That I feel like dying, I feel like dying

I can mingle with the stars and throw a party on Mars
I am a prisoner locked up behind Xanax bars
I have just boarded a plane without a pilot
And violets are blue,
Roses are red,
Daisies are yellow,
The flowers are dead
Wish I can give you this feeling that I feel like buying
And if my dealer don't have no more, then I feel like dying"

it doesn't take a degree to know music is made for people to listen to and believe in whatever they want to when it comes to the words. when it comes to someone trying to pull one meaning out of a song to me that is like someone trying to pull one meaning out of the bible, it just can't be done. only the writer knows what their heart was feeling when they wrote the words down.
