Sept. 21-27: Hall Of Fame Controversy, One Day At A Time

Posted Fri Sep 25, 2009 2:31pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in That's Really Week

Well, it's that time of the year again: Time for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame nominations. And, of course, that means it's time for crabby, crusty rock fans to debate and whine about which of the 12 new nominees should be inducted next year, and which other worthy contenders were incredibly left off the Hall Of Fame 2010 shortlist altogether (like, say, Rush). Let the bickering begin!

Of course, many "serious" rock fans are objecting to the inclusion of facepainted rock 'n' roll clowns Kiss--who have always been despised by music critics, whose musical skills have always been rudimentary at best, and who are better known for spitting blood and marketing themselves on lunchboxes than for their actual musical output at this point. But the rock titans' influence on stadium-rock culture, rock merchandising, and an entire generation of headbangers cannot be denied...and c'mon, who DOESN'T want to see Gene and Paul perform an allstar, special-guest-laden version of "Rock 'N' Roll All Night" at the 2010 induction ceremony, complete with pyro?

Other naysayers claim that disco-peddling possible Rock Hall inductees Abba and Donna Summer do not ROCK, pe se, but we here at That's Really Week beg to differ--Abba in particular rock pretty hard in their own shiny happy way, and their Hall Of Fame appearance might be the closest thing to a hoped-for Abba reunion that fans will ever witness. Plus Madonna, who sampled Abba in "Hung Up," is already in the Hall, so why not induct the original pop source, huh?

Additionally, in our not-so-humble opinion, long-passed-over nominees Laura Nyro and the Stooges certainly deserve to finally get in (come on, the Stooges honored Madonna at her induction last year, and Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton died this year), as do Genesis (their induction might placate angry Rush fans) and 1960s British invaders the Hollies. But it remains to be seen if any of them will indeed make it through.

And as for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, sure, they spawned a generation of cargo-shorts'd, shirtless rap-rockers...but is that an accomplishment that deserves to be rewarded, really, rather than punished? Is there a Rock And Roll Of Shame that the Peppers can join instead?

And finally, possibly the most controversial HoF nominee this year is veteran rapper LL Cool J. Some old-fashioned fuddy-duddies think rap does not belong in the ROCK Hall, but they just sound like grouchy Noel Gallagher griping about Jay-Z playing the Glastonbury Festival. There's no denial at this juncture in music history that rap and rock have combined forces (note the RHCP mention in the above paragraph, for better or worse), and if Grandmaster Flash and last year's inductees Run-DMC can get in, then so should LL, we say. After all, LL is pretty much the only MC of the '80s era who still has a flourishing and relevant career today, without having to star in a VH1 dating show.

OK, while we await the final Rock Hall 2010 verdict, other Hall Of Famers made headlines this week. Bruce Springsteen, another music veteran still totally on top of his game, celebrated his 60th birthday--either giving baby-boomers hope that they too can still look good in skintight denim well into their golden years, or making said baby-boomers feel very, very old.

Meanwhile, 2008 Hall inductee Leonard Cohen, 75 years young and still wowing audiences all over the globe with his live shows, had a scare onstage in Spain when he collapsed. But thankfully, he recovered from this minor fainting spell in time to perform in Israel for the first time in 30 years--despite protests from Palestinian activists calling for a boycott of his show. Leoanard responded by offering to perform in the West Bank city of Ramallah as well, and announced that proceeds from both concerts will go to Israeli-Palestinian peace organizations. Yep, Leonard's still cool after all these years.

Meanwhile, this week it was announced that a new single by late Hall Of Fame icon Michael Jackson, titled "This Is It" and featuring backing vocals by the Jackson brothers, will hit radio airwaves on October 12, in conjunction with the late-October theatrical release of MJ's posthumous This Is It concert documentary. "This song only defines, once again, what the world already knows--that Michael is one of God's greatest gifts," declared the song's co-producer and Jackson estate co-executor, John McClain. Two versions of the song will be included on a two-disc album package featuring some of the King Of Pop's greatest hits, along with unreleased versions of some of Michael's classic tunes and a never-before-heard spoken-word poem called "Planet Earth."

But perhaps the most shocking Hall Of Fame-related story of the week centers on the late John Phillips, of 1998 inductees the Mamas & The Papas. In her new tell-all autobiography High On Arrival, John's daughter, former child actress Mackenzie Phillips, just jaw-droppingly alleged that she had an, um, inappropriate relationship with her father, starting from when she was age 19 and continuing for several years. While Mackenzie insisted she does not hate her singer-songwriter father (who died in 2001) and doesn't want anyone else to hold a grudge against him--"Don't hate my father," she begged in People magazine--it seems unlikely that all fans will obey such a request for compassion after reading Mackenzie's oversharing memoir.

And on that disturbing note, thus wraps up another week in music news. Come back next Friday for more headspinning headlines, and until then, goodnight and good music.

Rap and rock have combined forces for worse. Induct Kiss and the Stooges I say.

By the way, I do have one story that I think would be worthy for this particular blog: Muse's new album 'The Resistance' is somehow number 3 in the US, not number one. I think that is a huge story since Muse was beaten by Jay-Z. Everybody knows that Muse is a billion times better than Jay-Z. The general genre of rock, and anything that is misinterpreted as rock (i.e. pop, punk pop, powerpop, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc) is a billion times better than Jay-Z's entire genre. Now THERE'S a story for your list, Lyndsey. I suppose you'll have to save it for next week.

the red hot chili peppers deserve to be in the HOF a lot more than most of the nominees! RHCP are one of the epic bands of the 90s, and to say that they should be in a hall of shame is the most ridiculous statements I have ever read. Stick to writing about Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus...yahoo writers suck. Go back to the community college you graduated from and take some courses about real music.

It doesn't matter. The rock and roll hall of fame is just a huge joke.

Anyone who prefers ABBA over The Red Hot Chili Peppers knows absolutely nothing about Rock-n-Roll........

Depeche Mode?

Kiss is on the ballot and Rush is left off? What a joke! These guys are so political.

9. Victor V -
Rap is a legitimate form of music, just because most of the rappers do not play instruments does not mean they have no musical skills. It is a skill to know how to write and flow with the rhythms of songs. Dont think so? try it sometime. Then you'll know why LL is going to be RRHOF. As a side note, Red Hot Chili Peppers have every right to be in the RRHC. They are not shameful.

10. Kevin -
Kiss,Rush, and The Stooges should have been inducted like 5 years ago but others who actuallt deserve to be in the "ROCK" hall of fame are Iron Maiden,Judas Priest,Deep Purple,Ozzy Osbourne,Kiss,Rush,Randy Rhoads, and Nirvana =]

The R&R Hall of Fame is a joke. Who cares.

13. Jeremy -
aaahhh.... L.L. Cool J thinks he is a rockstar......no i believe the term is rapstar... that is the word we are lookin for....then we would be segregating the rapstar an the rockstar.......
So what instriment do u play in ur band......a cpu generates 90% of ur output then u play the microphone... and wave ur hands in the air..... u r a bought and sold gemmick......not iconic....just a face for a theme..... so i think let em in......its just to entertain......absolved of morals... no one cares about this cuz hopefully u have made it out of ur teen years....u know just not so eager to identify with.....tomorrows new hope and yesterdays fad....ur just PR for record lable... u smile and perform.... someone else writes the "sound"......cuz music died with detroit....then MTV made music a publicity stunt....once u go classical......its all just noise.....let em in

To poster 14: Rap is not a legitimate form of music. Anyone with Garage Band could literally create a beat and rap to it. Writing a bad, repetitive poem with the grammar skillz a 1st grade student might possess is actually not all that hard. Generally, real music is a lot about the MUSIC. Talking to a beat is not music. It's poem-recital. Music is guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, etc playing in unison and in harmony and someone SINGING something MELODIC. Rap is pretty much the furthest thing from real music.

The R&R HoF lost credibility years ago, so nothing suprises me at this point. Ms. Parker can diss those that disagree with her if she pleases, but that doesn't change the fact that she's wrong. If you want to call it the "music HoF", find, change the damn name. But it's called the "Rock-n-Roll HoF", so no, many of the acts that get in shouldn't be there. Yes, Rush should be in. Yes, Tull should be in. And yes, YES should be in. We're talking bands that still exists, can still pull in 5k people easily at a show, and bands that have put out what, 20, 30 albums and existed 30 years or so? That bands like those aren't in makes a freekin mockery of the whole damned thing. So the Hall has become nothing more than a joke to most of us. At this point, they can't screw it up any more than it's already screwed up.

rock & roll is rock & roll, rap is crap, jungle music, has no place in the rock & roll hall of fame. rap is not concidered music in my book.anyone that does rap is nothing but a stuped ass. they can't sing a note,so why have the crap.i say keep it out of the rock & roll hall of fame.kep them out period.

17. Brad S -
Laura Nyro deserves to be inducted more than any other nominees. She was the first true female singer/songwriter and her influence has left a huge impact on such people as Joni Mitchell, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Todd Rundgren, Alice Cooper. All of those names have stated that Laura Nyro has influenced them.

18. LadyAyla -
ALL I CAN SAY IS ALICE COOPER DESERVES TO BE IN THE HALL OF FAME BEFORE KISS WOULD EVER BE IN IT. WITHOUT ALICE THERE WOULD BE NO KISS OR ANY OTHER SHOCK ROCK BAND OUT THERE!!!!!!!!!! THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME IS NOTHING TO ME IF ALICE DOES NOT GET IN NEXT YEAR IT IS SUCH A TRAVESTY THAT HE HAS NOT BEEN INDUCTED A LONG TIME AGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

19. Booker T -
Why on God's green earth has ALBERT KING, the greatest blues guitarist of all time, influencing Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Joe Walsh, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and countless others, not been inducted yet. Long live THE King!!!!

20. daphne -
The nominating committe has to stop trying to please everyone. LL can wait.!! Two of the nominees who truly deserve this have waited over 50 years. So many from the 50s' and 60's have been ignored for way too long.
