Idol Elimination Night: Carly Gets Cut!

Posted Wed Apr 23, 2008 7:11pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

From Jason Castro's headscratching Cats song choice to Brooke White's false start, last night's American Idol episode was filled with drama--which I suppose was fitting for a show centered on musical theater legend Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Well, tonight's elimination show was just as dramatical, to borrow an adjective from Reality Rocks fixture Flavor Flav.

Of course, it wasn't particularly dramatic that the Davids, Cook and Archuleta, were summoned by Ryan Seacrest first and told they were safe. After all, no one expected either David to be in the bottom two. (Yes, that's right, the bottom two--no more bottom three at this stage in the game. One of those stools has been returned to the Fox prop closet.)

But then Syesha Mercado and Brooke White were called--and Brooke looked so defeated, like her roller suitcase was already packed and waiting in the hallway a la America's Next Top Model. And the drama ensued.

Believe it or not, despite Brooke's major misstep last night...she was safe. Meanwhile Syesha, one of last night's standouts, still didn't get enough votes to stay out of danger.

And then, out sauntered Jason Castro and Carly Smithson. Now, everyone assumed Brooke would be in trouble tonight, and that turned out to not be the case. But surely Jason, whose "Memory" song selection was so misguided that even Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber himself protested it, would be in the bottom two...while Carly, who had one of her best performances of the season with "Jesus Christ Superstar," would make it through. Right?

Wrong. Jason was safe. I guess much like the cats he sang about last night, the guy's got nine lives. It was in fact Carly who was on the chopping block.

What, was today Opposite Day or something, and I just didn't get the memo? I am neither a massive Syesha or Carly fan, but even I admit that they delivered two of the best performances this week. The Idol producers must have thought so too, as they reminded viewers of this fact by making both girls sing their ALW songs one more time.

And then, Randy Jackson heard Ryan announce the news he'd hoped would never sully his ears: His pet project Carly Smithson had received the fewest votes. She was a goner.

Wow. I think I'm cursing the contestants or something. It seems that just when I start liking them, America disagrees and votes them off. Like, last week I said Kristy Lee Cook was much improved...and she got cut. A while ago I said Ramiele had finally gotten her groove back...and she got axed. This week I praised Carly's "Jesus Christ Superstar" to the high heavens...and poof, now she's history.

Maybe I better start writing every blog like it's Opposite Day, saying all my favorite contestants are terrible. You know, just to make sure I don't curse them too...

Thank you America!!! Finally!

LP, I feel your pain! I was absolutely shocked when I saw who was in the bottom three! I fully expected Jason and Brooke to be there - who on earth is voting?!?! Even Lord Andrew didn't like Jason's performance!

You're completely right, Carly and Syesha were two of the best ones last night, and I don't know how that happened. Too bad I'm Canadian and can't vote...

I like how they just got the two Davids out of the way first.

OMG! Didn't see this one coming. Thought for sure that Brooke and Jason would be the bottom. I was never really a fan of Carly but she did have talent and didn't deserve to go yet. Another idol shocker. Bigger shock than the Michael Johns elimination I think.

BOMBSHANKER!!!....Bollocks! Cheese-on-toast- Bollocks! mates.

Now, you know the show is RIGGED! The 'Inner-Clique' are: Jason, Brooke, Archuletta, and Cook. Syesha just go home now! Don't even bother learning your song!

Brooke White (Granola Hippy) just walked thru a Chernobyl disaster mixed with a Dinosaur stamped with a Soccar Riot thrown in...and didn't make the Bottom 2!!!!

FORGET Universal Healthcare!- We all need what Jason is smoking!!!!

UNBELIEVABLE!!- Now there's No KLC to blame! What's the deal?

I think I was right when I said the Secular-Progressives don't like songs that mention "Jesus"- lol.

When I saw that Syesha was called to the bottom two over Brooke, I got chills. Not those chills of awe and wonder, but of terror. Same thing with Carly and Jason. I'll admit that I liked everyone's performance in the top 6....except Jason's (I know this is gonna anger people). But surely he deserved the boot...or the bottom 2, at least?? Syesha and Carly rocked the stage last night!! I could have sworn they would have gone on to next week!!

This saddens me...and now I'm starting to lose faith in the show's voters.

How did Brooke and Jason BOTH escape the bottom 2 tonight. Last night I thought Brooke and Jason would be in the bottom 3 with the thrid spot being a toss up, since there was only two it should have been the worst two not the best two. America made a huge mistake tonight by not voting off Brooke. She should go home tonight and count her lucky stars and remember her lyrics next week. If Brooke has another false start it will be her third time and three strike and you are out.

its rigged i tell u!! rigged!!

I was thinking exactly the same as you thought of "cursing the contestants?" with your praises, LP. LOL! I noticed it way back Ramielle's elimination. I agreed mostly with your opinion on their performances especially on Carly this week. I'm neither a fan of her but for me hers was the best performance last night. Jinx on your applause? LOL!

I think 'They' (whoever controls American Idol) are looking for the "High School Musical" audience this year. I wouldn't be surprised if Jason makes it to the Top 3 at this point Or Brooke for that matter.

Clearly the producers want them in there for the demo. It's safe to say David Cook is the winner! He's good, don't get me wrong and probably a better Idol than Fantasia, Hicks, Sparks and Clay (we all heard the story of how someone messed up the final reading of the votes).

Yes, I threw Clay under the bus for one simple reason. Guys all think he's well 'sensitive' and not as manly as say a person like David C. David C could be the next Chris Cornell or whatever and if most guys won't get that 'stigma' to say the listen to him.

Archuletta & Castro are 'Nsync' (or "New Kids on the block") audience....David Cook could sing with the "Foo Fighter" or a "Sum 41" style band...It's all about Marketing!! The Producers know they may only have 1 more season left in America (and I don't know when Simon's contract is up either)- so they can't take 'chances' letting the phone votes determine the 'actual Outcome'...anymore than Hugh Hefner lets fans pick "Playmate of the Year"- lol.

You can't even get All the USA's Democrats to pick a candidate they all agree on!- lol. The same reason Kristy may have been 'given a push' (I admit! it's possible) and kept on for Drama & ratings!- Idol will never let anything negative happen to the Davids!

OH btw Carley was also animatedly talking to Ryan during Syesia's performance. She clearly has no class

13. Nina -
Totally agree!!! I've been waiting for this to happen since they announced the top 24.

Bridget.. Cheers!!! I am drinking to you and with you girl. I had a rather large beer at Outback with my dinner and 2 glasses of cab so far in my hotel room. I am sorry but did I actually watch Carly get eliminated??? Cause I could have sworn Brooke "don't forget the lyrics" White was going or possibly Jason "I was yawning backstage during commercial" Castro. But not Carly she was really good last night. Maybe I have had too much wine, NAH!!!! I think I need more....

Hmmm...
It's like this in middle America: You just don't make fun of God's only son!
I know, I know, I know...the context and all. But I can't name ya a single redneck or Bible belter who understands the song.
Carly was "makin' light" of JC, and she paid for it. I saw this coming last night, because I have been trying to explain this song to my friends and neighbors since the mid 70's.

At this point we all think we're experts at picking the last six in the order they should be booted.....not! While Carly had no chance of winning the competition, I've grown accustomed to contestants leaving "out of order", aren't we all? I liked Carly but she didn't have a ghost of a chance of winning. As for next week...why does it have to be a Neil Diamond focus? Shouldn't it be a somebody a little more contemporary? This guy was popular when most American families watched TV in black and white! I guess we're running out of "legends". I'd just be content to let them pick their own songs and let's them tank or triumph. I guess keeping things tight generates more votes so that'll never happen. Does anybody feel like it's just a forgone conclusion that David Cook is going to win? David A. is a nice kid, but he's a kid. It seems to meand others I talk to they want an adult to win this thing. It just makes the outcome more credible.

Okay. All you parents out there . . . take those phones and computers away from your children! What are they doing up that late anyway. If you watched your kids, maybe Jason would be been in the bottom three where he belonged, and not skating along on those pretty eyes [yes, they are, but this is not Teen Beat, gang].

And Brooke over Sayesha! Come on. Brooke, I have loved her. But she is falling away from the crowd performance wise, and she should be called to task for it. In fact, I think she should have gone home if all was fair in love and ratings.

Carly - what a total package, awesome singer. The public sending her home is shameful. If that is what REALLY happened [I am going toward the light. . . ]

Shock for shock sake is cheezy. Voting for someone in a singing contest just because their are "hot" is stupid. Sympathy votes for a woman who lied [off camera] saying she "never did that before on this show" is . . . well . . . it would be sad if it wasn't to stupid. [Man I need another word, but that one just does it.]

I am so bummed that one of the top 4 of the entire show was voted off because of reasons which have nothing to do with her talent, her performances, or her personality. I guess that is what hate and indifference can do for a poor working girl just trying to do her thing - and doing it extremely well.

20. runaway38 -
BTW, LP, could you rant and rave about Brooke next week so she can go home. I don't hate her. I actually like her. But she has come as far as she can go, and she should have gone home this week. So, ease up on Sayesha who deserves to be there [she is really coming along], and praise Brooke so the results can possibly be fair next week.
