Idol Elimination Shocker: Michael Goes Down Under!

Posted Thu Apr 10, 2008 6:55pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Last season, the AmIdol producers decided to keep in the spirit of Idol Gives Back by not eliminating anyone that particular week. (Remember? They claimed it was going to be the "most shocking elimination ever," then it turned out the shocker was that everyone was safe.) But this season, after all the warmness and fuzziness of Wednesday's charity special, it was back to the nasty business at hand, with a specially scheduled Thursday elimination night.

However, after weeks of speculation surrounding a supposed wild-card competition during this year's Idol Gives Back week, I was hoping that not only would last year's noble non-elimination tradition continue, but that Idol would "give back" in another big way: by giving a previously ousted semi-finalist another chance. Yes, I simply refused to let this wild-card dream die.

So after a hokey allstar lipsynch montage to the Monkees' "I'm A Believer" so bad that the show's producers should be eliminated for even coming up with such a concept (do we really need to see Dr. Phil trying to rock out?), the producers put viewers out of their misery by ending that musical travesty...and began putting the contestants out of their misery by revealing the much-anticipated results.

Little did I know, there was far more misery ahead.

But first came a sad charity mini-documentary starring Forest Whitaker, then a half-lipsynched Jordin Sparks/Chris Brown duet (more lipsynching? why would Jordin lipsynch on a show that she won because of her great singing voice?), then yet another commercial break, and then a Ford promo featuring the Idols tossing cans of paint around like they were doing a remake of the J. Geils Band's "Freeze Frame" video or something, then a Bono charity film. While the Forest and Bono bits were obviously important viewing, the rest was just time-killing filler, effectively dragging what could have easily been a three-minute show all the way to the patience-testing 60-minute mark.

But finally we all got to find out who hit bottom this week. And I learned the two of out my bottom-three predictions were correct. Yes, I guessed Syesha Mercado and Carly Smithson right, but Michael Johns--who'd NEVER been at risk before, not even the one week he deserved to be, when he wrecked "A Day In The Life"--was a BIG surprise to me, and probably to many other people. Guess voters weren't too "inspired" by Michael's cover of Aerosmith's "Dream On" after all.

And still, I kept waiting to find out if all three would be safe--and that there would in fact be a wild-card competition. But then Ryan Seacrest delivered news far worse than the fact that the whole wild-card thing was just a rumor after all. And he delivered it in the uncoolest, most uncharitable way possible. You'd think in week full of such good vibes and good deeds, he could have been a little nicer about it.

Yes, it's sad but true, fellow members of the Aussie Posse: Michael Johns went down under tonight.

That was enough of a bummer, but as I said, the way Ryan went about Michael's elimination was downright nasty. Remember how Ryan was such (to quote Paula Abdul) a cold-blooded snake when he eliminated Chris Daughtry in season 5? Well, that was nothing compared to tonight's act of snakiness.

Basically, Ryan said something like, "Michael, you got the lowest votes, but as you know, last year we didn't cut anyone during Idol Gives Back week. Well, this week...(insert long pause)....you ARE going home."

PSYCH!

Now, was that fakeout really necessary? Why kick a man while he's down? Why give Michael (and his fans) false hope like that? Why make us feel like we've all been punk'd? That wasn't very Idol Gives Back-ish of Ryan. I'm sure Bono would not have approved. I sure didn't.

Anyway, can't we still have a wild-card competition...so we can reinstate Michael Johns? Please? Come on, Idol, give back! Give us back Michael!

Oh well. I guess have to accept that yet another one of my faves is gone, and put all my proverbial Idol eggs in David Cook's basket now.

But Michael, if you're reading this: Dream on, Michael. Dream on.

I can't believe Michael went home tonight, I thought it would have been either Jason or Carly.

can somebody please tell me for the love of god why is Kristy Lee Cook is still here. She has delivered mediocre performances week after week and yet this chick still has not been kicked off. UGH!!!! America VOTE RIGHT!!! I am mad that Michael is gone cause he was good, while Kristy was not!!!

4 less viewers here for the remainder of the shows. What a sham, best singer gets cut.

i am shocked michael went home but even more shocked by how it was handled. ryan was very mean to get michael's hopes up like that, and it was very against the spirit of what this week about. michael was taking those phone calls last night during the telethon, so idol producers should be ashamed to treat him so unkindly.

Condolences, LP. This was a shocker. But we all know that he has one of the best shots at actually having a career. Looking forward to hearing more from him. (My eggs are still in the Jason Castro basket ever since Chikezie left.) I mentioned this on the last blog, I think I'm the only one (well, my boyfriend agreed) who liked MJ's "A Day in the Life." That's a crazy song and maybe my fav Beatles tune, and I thought he actually did an amazing job. But, whatchya gonna do. I got to say, his "Dream On" was probably his low point as far as I was concerned. But he was still a dream-boat and a great singer!

"Basically, Ryan said something like, 'Michael, you got the lowest votes, but as you know, last year we didn't cut anyone during Idol Gives Back week. Well, this week...(insert long pause)....you ARE going home.'" ~ LP.

No one should be eliminated in this way.

FLASH!!!...AHHHHHHHH, He's the #1 Kristy Fan!!! (my theme music)

I'll be here taking your calls, breaking hearts, juggling ref's to Neitzche, Howard Stern, and Bill O'Reilly with one hand and 'thinking' about Playboy Models, Kristy Lee & Julianne Hough (together!) and Lindsey's sexy fair skinned appeal with my other!!!...ALL BLOG Long!!!

Let the DRAMA, Name-calling, Finger Pointing, and Conspiracy/Speculation begin!!!!

Me and my husbands idol season 7 ends tonight as well, unless Michael can come back to the show!!!

Tonight's show was certainly not in keeping with the theme of hope, compassion and charity. I felt AI powers were setting us up. The whole night seemed to be leading to a safe one for all. Not a nice way to treat the fans, especially in a week when "Giving" is thee theme. I didn't think about the wildcard rumor (see quote below*), but upon reading your first-rate column LP, wished it had turned out as you imagined and hoped it would. Maybe the AI powers that be will steal this idea next year because I am sure they will get a lot of heat for how they eliminated MJ tonight. *For the record, I would say this about any one eliminated. I am not part of the Aussis Posee.

Here's to hoping someting like this had occurred: "after weeks of speculation surrounding a supposed wild-card competition during this year's Idol Gives Back week ... last year's noble non-elimination tradition continue(d), but ... Idol ... "g(a)ve back" in another big way: by giving a previously ousted semi-finalist another chance."

Has anyone noticed a pattern in the eliminations of boy, girl, boy, girl? In order elimination: David Hernandez, Amanda Overmyer, Chikeze, Raimele and now Michael Johns. I find it amazing that the weekly votes could be so gender selective on a regular basis.

I just actually watched the elimination. I don't have a TV and am crazy enough to look all this stuff up on YouTube. Oh, it was painful!!! Ryan was an [profane] about it!!! But Michael Johns killed it!!! As far as I am concerned, he and Jason Castro were the only two left that I actually wanted to listen to. Again, can't wait to see what he creates next. I hope he has an opportunity to take control and make some awesome music. He seems like such a very classy guy. Apologies for the over-commenting, I just had to type after watching the video. He really killed it.

Well either the "Hate Kristy" Mantra has worn out it's welcome or maybe KLC's just that Dam Good!

She wasn't even in the "Bottom 3" this week! It wasn't even close! I am as shocked as you are my sweet with the elimination of Johns as this means next we get to see an even MORE 'Fragile performance' from Brooke White- lol. She's not holding up well in my opinion! Maybe The Black Widow Cook can teach her some mental 'Cage Fighter' ZEN techniques?

By the way...This "America Vote Right" garbage sounds 'highly Narcissistic' on your part. What credentials do you have that make you any more educated on "Voter choices" than say Miss Parker or Myself?...Although I think you could beat 'Kristy Lees Horse' in a game of 'Tic Tac Toe'.

I saw film maker Kevin Smith lose multiple times to a chicken playing that...it wasn't pretty. With Kristy just keep telling yourself - There's always Next Week! (Keep Hate Alive!)- lol...isn't that what they say at your Anti-KLC meetings?? I wouldn't know.

13. Yahoo! Music User -
Per usual you hit the nail on the head LP.

14. Yahoo! Music User -
Dearest Frankie, don't apologize for "overcommenting", I love your posts and it wouldn't be the same for me without you on here. You are a sweetheart with a critical eye for detail. All the best,...

BTW LP, you got the majority feeling right I think. It is all over the blogs. I think the way Ryan delivered the news and the xenophobic Robin Williams' jokes where the lowpoints of the week. Not at all in keeping with the week's theme of inspiration and compassion.

Great column Lyndsey and really captured the sentiments being relayed out there on all the fan boards. The proverbially sh*t has hit the fan. This was a cruel elimination. Cruel because of how it was done.

I'm unsure how well other 8th place finishers have done over the years, but I am sure that Michael Johns will do alright for himself. He will be signed - no problem. I think he has mde the list of most shocking eliminations ever. Thanks for the update Lyndsey. Really enjoyed the column depsite the bad news

All I can say is- You would've LOVED it if it was Kristy Lee having been eliminated and you'd be Dancing!

Was it 'harsh' to Johns...probably! I admit Ryan didn't get any fans tonight (maybe lost a few!) but you have to admit it was amazing television!- did it shake you up? are you 'energized' now that you HAVE to Keep Watching to see what 'goes down' next week???

Then Seacrest did his Job correctly.

This is the problem with 'Touchy-Feeley' sentiments- you can't always have ice-cream cakes and back-pats. NEWS Flash Lindz (I'm gonna call you Lindz now- lol) It's gonna get WORSE! till there are TWO and then 1...then a tour...then the Fall and by Xmas no one will remember 80% of this season!...Kristy will be in the 20% you do!

My honest Apologies to the Fans of Mr. Johns!- I liked his style!- he was the only Dude that could David Cook a 'Run for his Money'- now Mr. Cook has No Competition in my Opinion.

I love Aussies!...I want to be one in my next life!- really!

Ryan teases a reprise of last year's elimination amnesty, but Michael is gone. In very poor taste to eliminate any one in this way, given the week's theme.

#18, Awww....thank you so much!! :)

Daughtry does himself proud. So will Johns! The best is yet to come.

Winehouse sings in Spain, glass of wine in hand
AP

AP - Soul diva Amy Winehouse sipped from a glass of red wine and looked a bit unsteady on her feet as she appeared in front of a large audience at the Rock in Rio music festival southeast of Madrid on Friday. Then, as…
