Week 2 Idol Eliminations: Finalists Wig Out

Posted Fri Feb 29, 2008 11:33am PST by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

This week's Idol elimination round included some shockers, like Amanda Overmyer making it through (gee, thanks a lot, Vote For The Worst!) and authenticity-challenged rock dude Robbie Carrico not exactly rocking the vote. But the biggest Thursday-night surprise for me, personally, was all the waterworks.

Seriously, after this week, American Idol should consider dropping core advertisers Ford and Coca-Cola, and just having every elimination episode sponsored by Kleenex. Or maybe by a suicide-prevention hotline.

OK, look...unlike Simon, I don't have a heart of granite. I swear. I do understand how difficult it must be for the castoffs when their dreams are prematurely crushed, especially when they're forced to sing one last depressing, dejecting time. (Poor Alaina Whitaker could barely squeak out a note Thursday night, and I didn't blame her one bit.)

Furthermore, I do understand that it's emotionally taxing when the remaining finalists must bid adieu to the people with whom they've shared such a unique bonding experience. But come on, already. The way the contestants were uncontrollably sobbing on Thursday, it was as if Robbie, Alaina, Alexandrea, and Jason Y. had been killed in some horrific, fiery plane crash--not merely eliminated from the top 20.

Getting cut from a reality show is not the most colossal tragedy in the world, you know. Just ask Chris Daughtry!

Really now, did the finalists not see this coming? Did they think Ryan Seacrest was going to say, "Surprise! None of you are getting cut tonight! You all get to stay! Forever! In fact, you all get lucrative record deals! And you all get ponies and a lifetime supply of ice cream, too!"

No, they knew four people unfortunately had to exit stage left--and let's face it, the 16 singers who remained might've been weeping a lot harder if they'd be the ones in the bottom four. Unless, of course, those were secretly joyous tears of relief they were shedding...

My point is--and this is a point I'd make not only about Idol, but about ANY reality competition with weekly eliminations, from Top Model to So You Think You Can Dance to Project Runway--someone's going to get cut every week. Only one contestant can win in the end. So if this is the way the Idol finalists are already acting in week 2, then how on earth are they going to hold up between now and the finale? It's downright troubling, because Elimination Night is never going to get easier--therefore I hope for their sake that these singers develop thicker skins. They'll need thick skins to survive in the music biz, anyway.

All right, enough of that. On less teary, more hairy note, now that Robbie's gone, those wacky wig rumors can finally be retired to the archives. We may never know for sure whether Carrico's hair was real (or just real expensive), but hey--maybe Robbie had more in common with his ex-girlfriend Britney Spears than previously believed:

Sorry, couldn't resist...after Thursday's sobfest, I figured one last wig joke would help lighten things up.

Getting voted off may not be the worse thing, but these kids have been isolated together for a really long time. Its not rocket science to figure out why some got emotional. Its not just about not winning, its also about having to leave those they have grown so close to. And the ones who got emotional that were staying were sad to see them go for the same reason. Why is that so hard to figure out or understand? Its not. People just like to nit-pick.

Archuleta should win!! Cancel the competition and give him the big prize already.

getting emotional is one thing, but if these ppl cry every time someone gets cut they have a touch 3 months ahead especially since they're only going to get closer the more weeks they're together. someone will have a nervous breakdown at this rate.

I think what is coming to light is that some of these kids have known each other for years. They've competed against each other before. David and Alex were good friends. I know people will probably roll their eyes when they read this, but I don't think it's been all pudding and dumplings for David either just because he's doing so well. On Tuesday the other guys looked like they wanted to throw him through a plate glass window. The praise he's received from the judges and the response from the public must be gratifying but also isolating. I'm sure cliques form amongst the cast just like amongst any other group of young people or all people for that matter. And let's not forget, most of the ones crying are the youngest of the bunch. There is a big difference between a 17 year old and an 27 year old, even they've had similar professional experiences. The fact that he has emerged as a favorite so early would certainly make things a little tense among the cast. It looked to me like he lost one of his defenders and friends last night.

Archuletta is the best! You really have to listen to the songs. He is the only one that knows what pitch and key is.

Alaina definitely got ripped off. Between her and Kady (wannabe Britney)Kady should've gone home. Alaina has an amazing voice and for being 17! Wow! I hope she keeps going with singing. And I agree, Luke should go, he should've been gone this week. His voice is too high pitched. I try to imagine listening to a whole CD of each contestant to help pick my favorite but trying to imagine a whole CD of him just isn't my cup of tea.

i am toally not a fan of archuleta and don't understand why he is so popular. however he is just a kid and if it's true that he's being ganged up upon because he's doing well, i feel bad for him. also that is stupid of the contestant cuz the more they gang up on him the more the public will come to his defense and vote for him.

i think robbie should've stayed and amanda should've left she sux

Hank , I bet your right, they probably do have a big surprise for young Archuletta, Maybe a surprise that he really thinks he wants, but really doesn't have a clue to the sliminess, that lays ahead for him in the music business. He looks pretty naive .

11. secret agent -
i think alaina shouldve stayed and kady shouldve left but unfournately it was not like that but anyway like ryan says its all up to you america

I'm glad to see Robbie and his wig go!

I don't know why people bag on Luke. My wife and I really like him. He's got a ballad voice, not a power one. I also think that Amanda is going to really shine when she gets over her nerves and really finds the correct songs.

I agree that the crying is much more pronounced this year, but I can't imaging the new type of stress that these people are under. They will get used to it, given time, but they need to be given a chance.

14. Becki -
Archuleta is by far the best this season. I do not get how they can say it is the Top 24 being knocked down to the top 12, when they let two guys and two girls go each week. I would think it should be THE bottom four, regardless of sex. Make it THE true top 12. Also, I lost alot of respect for the show when they released Josiah, and kept Amanda and Carly. I honestly can't stand either woman's voice, and Josiah had a heart of gold. The judge's need to open their eyes, and America needs to start voting for the best perormer, not the cutest contestant.

Why isn't anyone propping Michael Johns? He is the best of this totally mediocre group. Michael rocks.

16. Rufus -
I like Michael Johns quite a bit. He's not my favorite. But he's in my top three.

17. C -
Robbie should have sang Tuesday night like he did lastnight. His voice was much stronger and he sounded like a rocker, I think he is good and maybe he'll make it somewhere. The girls were both good too! They keep saying this is the best group ever, wrong!!! The best group ever was Daughtry and only Daughtry he is the best that has ever been on the show. No one has compared to him yet...

18. Yahoo! Music User -
I agree with Becki (and what Lyndsey said a while back). The top 24 should be made up of the best 24 singers regardless of gender. And they should be voted off each week based on the bottom 4 regardless of gender. I also lost respect for the show when they let Josiah go in favor of some contestants with absolutely no originality or relevance.

19. douganhaley -
i dont think kady should have made it she was also fake cryin when the other girl got voted off i think american idol is rigged

20. Fiferize -
I agree with Becki They should eliminate regarless of sex. It's not the true top 12 doing it this way. The girls should compete against the guys, not just each other. I also agree that Archuletta is great, but doesn't have a clue what he's going to be up against if he wins. All the show bix is liable to ruin him. Especially since he's been put on a pedistal already.
