Idol Update: The Top 12 Will Sing The Fab 4!

Posted Wed Feb 27, 2008 7:27pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

In my boys-night recap from earlier today, I lamented the lack of Beatles songs during last week's '60s Night.

In fact, other than David Archuleta and Blake Lewis's performances of John Lennon's solo song "Imagine," Taylor Hicks' cover of (the George Harrison-penned) "Something," and a Sgt. Pepper's medley on last season's finale, Beatles songs of any kind have (for legal reasons) been conspicuously absent from Idol throughout all seven seasons.

Until now!

Yes, today on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM morning radio show, American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe revealed that the entire 180-song Beatles catalog is finally available for use on the show...and when the top 12 hopefuls sing in just two weeks, they'll be warbling the words of Lennon & McCartney.

Very exciting news! But considering that the Beatles are arguably the greatest music-makers of all time, the season 7 finalists are up for a real challenge here. After all, people don't like to hear Beatles songs messed with. Mangle a classic like "Ticket To Ride" and you're pretty much guaranteed a ticket to ride straight out of Hollywood. Never in Idol history has the make-or-break issue of "song selection" been as crucial as it will be on Beatles Night.

I'm already racking my brain trying to match the right Beatles tune to the right contestant. Here's what I've come up with so far...feel free to post your own suggestions on the message board below!

Amanda Overmyer - "Helter Skelter" (because it's the Beatles' most rockin', most Manson-ish song)

Brooke White -  "Here Comes The Sun" (yes, I know it's a George Harrison tune, but she's got to do it because like George, she's a dark horse)

Carly Smithson - Paul's "Mull Of Kintyre" (y'know, because she's Irish)

Danny Noriega - "Get Back" (with everyone talking about how girly and pretty Danny is, I want to him ham it up while belting out that line about sweet Loretta thinking she's a woman but really being a man)

David Archuleta - "Yesterday" (because he's good with the weepy ballads; the grandmas and Paula will loooove it)

David Cook - "Paperback Writer" (because he's a word nerd!)

Jason Castro - "All You Need Is Love" (because he's great at singing feelgood hippie ditties)

Michael Johns - "Come Together" (but I want him to do the Aerosmith version!)

Robbie Carrico - "I'm A Loser" (because--sorry, it's mean of me to say--the guy probably ain't gonna win this competition)

Great news! The Beatles are awesome, and I think your matches are probably right on, poor Robbie, if he'd only tried to be the boy band dude that he is, maybe he would have made it a little farther..........ah, well, he was nice to look at while it lasted!

This is great it will show who can cut it.I hope David Archuleta does Let it BE.I Believe he'll blow everyone away.

Beatle songs have achieved "mythic" status purely on the basis of how they have been canonized by rabid listeners and hyperbolic critics: this is not to say that their catalog doesn't contain timeless material, but the truth is, very few critics ever gave their music the objective aesthetic analysis they cry out for. For instance, its known to most classical music academicians that the Beatles appropriated passages from classical composers within the context of such songs as "Michelle" and "Martha My Dear." After hearing the "naked" version of Let It Be some years back, I'm convinced that if the talents of folks like Sir George Martin, Geoff Emerick and Alan Parsons were not on hand in the control booth, history might have painted a less hysterical endorsement of their studio material. This is one of the major reasons the band decided to quit touring - they knew their live versions would pale by comparison to their studio work. So let's stop acting as if other bands and artists did not contribute timeless songs to the lexicon of popular music. And when Madison Avenue begins pillaging their catalog beyond such featherweight tracks as "All You Need Is Love" and "Hello, Goodbye", let's see if the legacy remains beyond reproach.

sgtpepper144... "there" is some trouble taking your criticism seriously, those homonyms can be so tricky... everyone is entitled to "their" opinion, even illiterates.

12. Yahoo! Music User -
Oh, my, sgtpepper144! You should have simply left well enough alone. In your little retort to whomever that was, I count a total of 2 misuses of the word "than" rather than the correct "then", you misspelled the word "miss spelled", and you used the wrong version of "you're". You really are pretty much illiterate.

Oh, and by the way... I LOVE THE BEATLES! AND EUPHONIC BREW!!

The key to success on Idol seems to be vocalization so I think songs like If I Fell or It's Only Love would work.

David G - yes it took all the people involved in the making if the Beatles album to give the Beatles that "late Beatles" sound we all know. HOWEVER, I too have heard stripped down versions of their songs and they are still awesome pieces of music. Unlike so many bands nowadays the Beatles took active roles in ALL parts of their albums. For starters they wrote their own songs! So I feel like, even if George Martin was mixing in some orchestra sounds for them, the Beatles were on hand approving and or disagreeing with the sound. I mean sure, there are tons of great bands throughout history. The Beatles were just darn good singers, songwriters and trail blazers on the music scene. They happened at the right time in history. Everything worked out well for them. Who can deny they are awesome? Ok, well, I'm sure someone out there would... but anyway, should be interesting to see what American Idol contestants will do with the songs....

This blog epitomizes why Lyndsey Parker is such a popular blogger and my personal favorite.

Thanks Lyndsey for inviting us to freely post our individual suggestions on the message board for Beatles tunes.

Also, thanks for information like "[T]oday on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM morning radio show, American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe revealed that the entire 180-song Beatles catalog is finally available for use on the show."

Your blogs are not only fun and smart, but informative.

Like so many others who leave comments re: Ms. Parker's blogs, I really appreciate learning that she regularly reads our comments. I just noticed that a little over 50 minutes ago she left a message for someone concerning geographical information re: Ireland.

By the way Lyndsey, if you're reading this comment, you really made this high school geography teacher [originally from Ireland and now living in Canada] chuckle. Your response to the individual who corrected your earlier error included the ability to laugh at yourself in the most humble way, when you wrote: "Man, guess that is why I am a blogger and not a geography teacher!"

This sentence made me holler.

One of your many [Irish-]Canadian fans, ... Keep up the amazing blogs.

Wow! This is the third time I've noticed that you receive a significant amount of comments from people who identify as teachers, and even university professors. I think this is to your credit. Such seemingly clever people (and/or people who likely enjoy intellecual debate) tend to regularly read your blogs. I also enjoy what you have to say (and "no" I am not a teacher).

I'd also add that equally enjoyable is reading the comments from other people (with the exception of the unnecessarily cruel or prejudicial ones). People from all walks of life, and all ages seem to be fans of your blog (or at least interested enough to read what you have to say). I find their comments refreshing and smart. Thanks everyone and especially Lyndsey Parker.

Love, love, love your suggestion that Danny Noriega belt out "Get Back" (including the line about sweet Loretta thinking she's a woman but really being a man). I also enjoyed hearing him sing {about the non-co-ed jail in} "JailHouse Rock."

"Number forty-seven said to number three:
Youre the cutest jailbird I ever did see.
I sure would be delighted with your company,
Come on and do the jailhouse rock with me."

Love you Danny!!!

It may have been mean to say as you suggest yourself, but you were proved right when you wrote:

"Robbie Carrico - "I'm A Loser" (because--sorry, it's mean of me to say--the guy probably ain't gonna win this competition)."
