American Idol Results: The Last Days Of Disco

Posted Wed Apr 22, 2009 7:26pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Man, I KNEW doing disco on American Idol was a bad idea.

Yes, last night's performance show was relatively painless--Adam Lambert, Kris Allen, and Allison Iraheta actually did a particularly good job of de-cheesifying such potentially cheesy music--but tonight's results show was so cheesy, Fox ought to have recruited Kraft, Velveeta, and/or Cheetos as new sponsors.

The show began with judge/choreographer Paula Abdul teaching the top 7 some disco moves more advanced than their usual step/touch/step/touch routines, then the contestants took those moves to the main stage, Hustling and lip-synching through a "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" group number while dressed in Brady Bunch leisure suits. Ugh. I personally got enough within the first 30 seconds. If I thought Danny Gokey was already a (Simon Cowell's words) "clumsy" dancer, that was nuthin' compared to this disco debacle.

I was just glad that Scott MacIntyre wasn't still around for this. Watching him trying to pick up Paula's moves would have been truly painful, and making him unknowingly wear one of these polyester outfits would've been worse than that time the stylists stuck him in "flesh-colored" pink pants.

There was also a group number featuring old-school disco stars Freda Payne, Thelma Houston, and KC (sans the Sunshine Band) that was enough to have me yelling the early-'80s mantra "disco sucks!" all over again.

Freda was instantly out of breath and hit many bad notes that sounded like the clunker Anoop sang at the end of last night's "Dim All The Lights"; Thelma sang well but missed the line at the beginning of her song and executed some questionably "sexy" moves for a lady her age; and KC just did not "get down tonight" at all.

It was so bad that when it was time for tonight's other performer, season 7 runner-up David Archuleta--who, as my regular readers know, I have NEVER liked--it was almost a relief.

You know who else was probably kind of relieved? This week's two eliminated contestants, the expected Lil Rounds and Anoop Desai. Lil has been raked over the proverbial coals almost all season long for her lackluster performances, so she surely won't miss Simon's scathing critiques, and Anoop has been in the bottom three so many times it's obviously taken a massive toll on his once-sunny disposition. (As Ryan put it as Anoop was eliminated tonight: "It seems like you're numb to this after all these weeks.")

Personally, I was just relieved that Allison wasn't one of tonight's castoffs. Last week I questioned the judges' surprising decision to utilize their one-time-only Judges' Save on underdog Matt Giraud, when they still had one more week to use it or lose it on someone perhaps more deserving (and with more of a chance of actually winning, according to Simon). So when Allison was in the bottom three this week (what is wrong with America? why aren't more viewers voting for Allison???), I was skerred.

If it turned out the judges wouldn't be able to save Allison this week because they'd already wasted their veto power on Matt, I was going to be MAD. Especially when she'd just endeared herself to me even more by singing a snippet of OK Go's "Here It Goes Again" while walking over to the bottom-three stools tonight.

But since Allison was thankfully safe--as was Matt, by public vote this time--I must say, the judges did the right thing last week. Matt's not going to win, but I don't mind him sticking around a couple more weeks, since it was Lil who should have gone last week in the first place.

I just hope Allison manages to stick around even longer.

Parker out.

Yes, tonight was unmercifully painful! At least Ryan didn't drag out Lil's offing. But back to the pain - These Iowa show-choir numbers have got to go!

Looking like Chris and Adam for the finals. I still like Danny cause he's a good guy, but the other two are more polished right now. Danny needs to pick better songs like he did in the beginning.

Why aren't people voting for allison- and why is America in love with Danny?

i was sad to see anoop go. i mean i did WANT him to go but still for some reason i got teary-eyed. maybe it was the exiting video and i was remembering how much love i had for him early on in the season. it's too bad that he never got to sing "i'll make love to you" on the show. i feel like he never really lived up to the potential that he showed in his clef videos but then again, he wasn't really given a chance to (with the irrevelent theme weeks).

anywho, i'm glad with the top 5. i tip my hat off to anoop though. he was definately underrated and in my ears had the second best voice in the competition (adam has the best). so you'll be missed.

adam ftw!!!

I know. I was about to be pissed if Allison was kicked off. WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?!

Your blog after each Idol show should be "required reading." Great fun as well as insight!

Lyndsey - I agree with you word for word on this blog. What was up the out of tune, out of breathe disco oldies performing? That was really painful to watch and listen to. They were all out of breathe and looked tired. As for KC I couldn't hear his voice. I only heard the background singers. Stop bringing people who can't perform just to stall time.

It was time for Lil and Anoop to go.

I like the group performances. Adam out shines them all!!! HE IS SO HOT. HE EVEN DANCES BETTER THAN ALL OF THEM!! I LOVE ADAM!!!!! ADAM ALL THE WAY!!

Lindsey...right on!

"There was also a group number featuring old-school disco stars Freda Payne, Thelma Houston, and KC (sans the Sunshine Band) that was enough to have me yelling the early-'80s mantra "disco sucks!" all over again."

I had a '78 Chevette with a disco sucks bumper sticker. It is always a bad idea to bring out us old farts to do "a retro" thing.
Gawd! that was embarrasing to see Freda try to put her out of shape body in that gold dress! And bring her oxygen tank quick!

IDOL that was one bad idea!

Danny should be the next to go. He is so mediocre it's not even funny. At least the other contestants have some personality on stage!

I am sooo happy that Anoop and Lil went home! Now the next person to go home is down to Danny, Kris, and Matt. As far as I am concerned (and can see) Adam and Allison can do no wrong. I hope for Danny to go next as he has been so boring to me. But he may surprise me and actually do something that doesn't put me to sleep.
Thanks LP for another great blog, it's so weird how you read my mind!!!!!

Anoop had the best voice in this competition. America is just too racist and not ready for an American-Indian singer. Just not ready...

I have always thought the group numbers sucked! Please! I don't want to see the group number. I don't want to see strange people perform (a la Lady Gaga!) I don't want to see has beens stink up the stage.

I just want to know who was voted off and then I just want them to GO. Don't have them sing the same crappy song that got them voted off in the first place. Just do their little tribute film and GO!

Lil lost me when she did that Tina Turner impression! Bye Lil! Best of luck!

Whoever the Yahoo Music User that said that Anoop going home is a racist thing, that is hilarious.. um no, it is because he is boring. There are plenty of people who have great voices but it doesn't mean I want to listen to them

It was sad to see Anoop go. Given that he had no shot of dethroning Adam, Danny and/or Chris from being in the finals, at least he found his identity - not like Matt. They should have let Matt get eliminated last week. Heck, if they didn't cut Lil some slack for her identity crisis, I don't see why Matt deserves any better. She obviously has the better vocals.

Personally, I expected Allison to be in the bottom this week. Don't get me wrong, she's good. But I don't know if she's The-Next-American-Idol Good.

Next week, I really do hope Matt gets eliminated. He's already been given too many chances, yet continues to disappoint.

Will public opinion be wrong yet again? I sure hope not...

Allison rocks....America is CRAZY for putting her in the bottom three AGAIN..Seriously, she is the only reason I watch Idol right now. I think Kris, Danny and definitely Matt are actually quite boring. And Adam is great but still my vote goes to Allison. I was a David Cook fan last year and this year Allison is my fave...I would love to see her go to the top three at least! Matt and Kris are honestly forgettable and Danny is typical.

15. Juiced383 -
Everybody is failing to mention the horrific David Archuleta performance.. I mean..... wow.... that was bad!!

16. Yahoo! Music User -
Anoop getting eliminated isn't a racist thing. If it was, he would have been gone from the show ages ago. His heritage, however, may have an impact on his overall image, however slight.

Come on America, admit it. Can you really imagine a performer with mad talent like Adam, but has the appearance of someone like Anoop, as your next American Idol? I doubt you can...

Don't worry, I doubt it's racist. It's probably just perception.

17. camashe -
Very happy with tonight's results :) Now if we could only get rid of Danny. And Matt

18. zephyr10 -
Let's hear it for old fat disco clowns!! I don 't think America has a problem with Allison's voice ...they just don't like her looks, especially for a 16 yr. old..sorry. When Kris sings, there are times when he looks like a donkey braying..sorry. Matt ESCAPED. The midget David was baaaad. But Freda, wooooo, a see-through dress and an oxygen tank and we are stormin' beeaahhhhch, owow.

19. Yahoo! Music User -
If we get a sashaying, black-nail-polished, eye-linered American Idol I am never watching this show again. Can't stand Adam and can't listen to him. He stinks.

you know what? i love allison(and she is my bet for this season) and i know she's not going to win this competition but she at least deserve to be this year's runner-up! what's happening with america? allison in the bottom 3? UNBELIEVABLE!!!

go allison!!!! :)

For tenor from Malta, a star-making role?

AP
Thu Nov 26, 2009 12:01am PST

AP - There's something about the honeyed sweetness of Joseph Calleja's voice that seems to evoke memories of a golden age, as if this young tenor carried within his vocal cords a secret passed down from bygone generation… More »
