Adler's Appetite For Self-Destruction

Posted Fri Dec 19, 2008 12:59pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

A few weeks ago, I wrote about former GNR drummer Steven Adler's star turn on the highly addictive (ahem) VH1 Celebreality show, Celebrity Rehab 2. Despite a couple of tempter tantrums and one drug-induced psychotic episode (not to mention holding the dubious honor of being KICKED OUT of Guns N' Roses in 1990), Steven still managed to be the most likable cast member on the entire show. I'd therefore been rooting for him since the season premiere.

But today--ironically the very morning after VH1 aired the Celebrity Rehab 2 finale, on which Steven received his graduation papers from Dr. Drew and made a pledge to transition into a sober-living facility (and appear on the upcoming sequel show, Sober House)--Steven was back in court again.

Today a Los Angeles court commissioner ordered Steven to return to rehab, which is the only way he'll be able to avoid doing prison time for a July 2008 arrest for felony drug possession.

You can watch Steven on the show (dressed in his perhaps far-too-appropriate "Highway To Hell" tee) discussing his fears of a post-rehab relapse, right HERE.

Guess Steven had good reason to be worried. I'm still worried about him myself, frankly.

Anyway, while I am very much looking forward to watching Sober House--which debuts January 15 and will star Steven Adler; his season 2 castmates Nikki McKibbin, Amber Smith, and Rodney King; season 1 alums Mary Carey and Shifty from Crazytown; and random basketcase Andy Dick--I know that Steven's story will sadly not end there.

In fact, I would hardly be surprised if, much like recurring Rehab characters Shifty and Jeff Conaway, he makes a tail-between-bowed-legs return to Celebrity Rehab 3.

And when he does, I'll still be rooting for him.

My heart broke for Steven during the first few episodes of Celeb. Rehab and was so thrilled when he agreed to go into the sober living facility at the end. (He and Rodney were my favourite cast members.)
Then I read a few weeks ago that he was arrested and was so sad for him. He truly seems to be a likable guy and just needs help. Let's hope he keeps getting it until he does recover and if he needs to go back to see Dr. Drew (who is amazing, IMO)then more power to him! Hang in there, Steven! I'm rooting for you, too!

Adler will either seriously work a program of recovery or he will die. It's that simple. How's that for entertainment?

Life is a Journey Not a Destination, no one can make him Clean up except himself, not even Dr. Drew. I know it took me 15 years to sober up, it comes from inside of you, your Heart and Soul you have to be ready to want to live, or you'll Suffer until you Die. it's insainity, Hope he see's the light at the end of the Tunnel. Peace.

I didn't mean to imply that Dr. Drew was a miracle worker. I know all too well the horrors of addiction and the struggles of 'getting the monkey off your back'. I lost a brother to alcohol abuse. I only meant that Dr. Drew seems to be very compassionate and PASSIONATE about his willingness to help.

The only thing that bugs me is that everyone always keeps the same hairstyle. I guess if I was a personal friend of his, Id be glad hes got the same old familiar style but in a way I wish some of the old rockers would get makeovers and also make over the music. I guess each person has their own way of being themselves. I wish Axl wouldnt have gotten plastic surgeery and its sad how becoming famous is hard for people because their values are street level type values and they try and stay true. One reminder to eveyrone - GUNS N' ROSES WAS ABOUT DRUGS AND ALCOHOL. ANYONE WHO IS B*TCHIGN ABOUT GETTING BACK THE OLD GUNS needs to realize that most people arent shooting heroin and snorting coke in their early 30s because we all have to work at jobs. Yet we expect bands to give us some kind of drugged out feeling like the old days. If you want to feel the old guns agains, go buy yourself some drugs and alcohol and sit around getting wasted for a year or two solid. Thats what Guns n Roses were about. Early ninetys drug culture, cocaine, crystal and crack - all brand drugs at the time.

We all mke fun of these drug types but everyone thinks the music is 'cool'. Then when people crucify themselves for you, you critizes them afterwards

EVeryone loved getting high with GNR but who is trying to help them get in rehab, Well I guess to me, rehab is something they should have done and gotten over with 15 years ago. Why belabor the point. Like someone mentioned we all have our problems. Is it about music or is it about rehab. Back int he day gNR were about both. Thats where that stands and where it always will stand you cant have GNR without drugs etc. Everyone just needs to move on or else AXL and eveyrone need to start getting wasted in front of everyone again, one of the two

I really hope there's no one out there gullible enough to send "Al Bald" any money.
Al, seriously man..if it's really that bad, go apply at McDick's or some other place such as that. There's no shame in that, but there is shame in begging money from strangers over the internet.
It's also not very wise to post your address,if indeed it is your address. Someone might come over and beat your ass for being so stupid.

We all have been to rehab at one point or another if we admit to being GnR fans. its time to move on from drugs or else to take more. take your pick but rehab is only supposed to last 30 days not 30 years.

17. mildewbrain -
Alot of punk bands like GNR are based on drugs and popularity among drug users. why do people complain when all the drugs are gone and the bands cant move on because people wont let them. GNR is a drug band. leave them alone. it was crazy times and thts what it was. 21 year olds getting wasted, now thats over and there are a zilliom more 21 year olds getting wasted to different drugs. The only band who is still successfully playing to 21 year olds is the ROlling Stones who were willing to continue doing drugs.

mildewbrain: You don't know much about rehab, do you? The fact is, most addicts relapse before finally becoming sober and the person is never "cured". It is a life-long problem and they are always in recovery, no matter if they haven't touch a drop of booze or any drug for 30 years, because there could be a trigger that sets them off at any time.

19. mildewbrain -
I disagree with you yahoo music user. strides have been made. Alot of people who were 'into coke' in the early 90s just arent any more and I could give you some extreme examples. Cocaine and crack are just not a big temptation to a lot of people for their whole life. Just becaue you did something at 22 doesnt mean you will do it forever. If Adler is an alkie then fine but thats very garden variety and its not newsworthy at this point. He hasnt played music in 15 years. who cares if he got drunk last night?

20. mildewbrain -
It sthe same with Nirvana. He was just a druggie and the music is 3 chord whatever. Kurts should not have been exalted like that because he offed himself. There is no honor in it and his lyrics were just a messed up thing from his head. Blind Melon singer was a sadder case. The thing is is why was everyone so sad and messed up back then. BECAUSE OF DRUGS
