Scarlett Johansson: One Of The Most Brilliant Records You'll Hear This Year, Honestly

Posted Fri May 2, 2008 12:18pm PDT by Dan Martin in The NME Blog

When Scarlett Johansson's name was linked to the role of Courtney Love in the forthcoming adaptation of Kurt biopic Heavier Than Heaven, it was a rumour we were inclined to believe. Not just because of insider knowledge, but because we at NME had heard word that Scarlett was about to do a pretty decent turn as a rock star in her own right.

Buzz around her debut album as a real-life muso, Anywhere I Lay My Head, has been buzzing for a while now. And this week it arrived in the postbags of us U.K. journalists.

And simply: Wow.

If you thought a Hollywood A-lister recording an album of Tom Waits covers sounded like a folly too far, it's because you couldn't have imagined a Hollywood A-lister could throw such a totemic curveball of a vocal performance. She sounds like Nico, only grander, and more like a space alien. And possibly even more nonchalant and detached. It's like Dusty Springfield was in My Bloody Valentine.

All complete with breathtaking production from Dave Sitek--named only last week in NME as the number-one most exciting futurist innovator operating in music right now. And guest vocals from David Bowie. And guitars from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner. What's not to go silly over?

With Amy Winehouse turning Bond Girl (sorta), barriers are becoming nicely blurred by a new generation of she-rockers who recall an older kind of star magic. A fantasy line between futurist music and old-school Hollywood.

We're not so sure about today's news that Nicole Kidman (a woman last heard duetting "Somethin' Stupid" with Robbie Williams) is going to produce and star in a movie about Dusty Springfield, but you can't have everything:

Check out a future issue of NME for an exclusive in-depth interview with Scarlett herself, and try and cross your legs until Anywhere I Lay My Head is released later this month, because it will slay you.

yeah, i'm super suprised...very nice (she even rocked the acting in the vid)

I (personally) hated it. Never heard something so bad go right through my ears.

I really thought this song was bad. It's got a really simple melody and the vocals were obviously distorted and still flat. On a personal note, I hate it when actors attempt singing careers or singers attempt to act. Please Scarlett, stay pretty for us and keep your musical "talents" canned.

i will reserve judgement til i hear the whole record. it's true she's not the best technical singer but not everyone has to sound like mariah or an american idol contestnat. scarlet is doing something different unexpected & artsy, and i can appreciate that even if her vocal range is limited. give her a chance!

Not bad, Has a Pink Floyd thing going on. Not everything needs to slap you in the face, or tell you the whole story.

kind of grows on ya. not the best singer, but for some reason i like it

Don't we especially question the sincerity of people when they say "To be honest with you..." or end their remarks with a pause, and say... "honestly." ? Dan Martin, the reviewer of Scarlett's music, could not have been more transparent that he loathes her music. I don't blame his deliberate ambiguity. My heart goes out to him for having to suffer a review of her music to keep the party invitations coming. Honestly.

Once someone compares something to My Bloody Valentine, I expect lots of swirly, psychedelic guitar brilliance on the level of Kevin Shields.

I'm guessing there isn't actually any, and there are a lot of keyboards instead.

Finally, an remake with some quality substance. And a talented actress who can deliver her soul now just by hearing her! I say right on beautiful... I like it better than the original. Its got a T.V. on the Radio type thing going on!
Nice work!

this girl might be pretty and a pretty good actress but never again will i want to hear that metallic husky and rough voice come from the speakers EVER! i literally hated it! it made her sound soooo weird as if the record comp was afraid of actually showing her voice.

While this isn't nearly as horrible as just about every other actress-turned-"singer" I can think of, it's just...boring. It drags. The vocals are heavily distorted and have such a small range that pretty much anyone could perform them adequately. If most people recorded this exact product there's no way it would be released on a major label.

No thanks. Not even close to original. Trying to sound like Cat Power way too much and she isn't nearly as good.

I was really expecting better! It's definitely different, but it doesn't sound good to me. It sounds like a bad American Idol audition.

15. Lolita -
That sounded awful.

16. Jenine -
Her voice is awful. She sounds like she's depressed and suicidal. Yuk. Stick with acting, Scarlett.

This song blows!! you couldn't even tell what the chourus was.

honestly, i won't be able to respect her or her album until she starts to write her own music. anyone can sing if they have the right writer/producer on their team. all she is proving is that she has the star power to get a team of people to make an album. she's the paris hilton of indie soul.

Are you kidding me? That was the worst thing I have ever heard. You can't even understand what she's singing--if you can even call that singing. It was more like chanting.
