Ten Controversial Albums That Didn’t Destroy Your Life

Posted Thu May 21, 2009 6:15pm PDT by Rob O'Connor in List Of The Day

Green Day are getting some free publicity from Wal-Mart, since the store won't sell their album 21st Century Breakdown without the band doing a little personal clean-up. Of course, this nonsense has been going on for years, with artists offering up "clean" versions of their albums for fans either too unsophisticated to buy the album elsewhere or who like getting the boring version of said album.

I enjoy watching GoodFellas with all the expletives altered. So what the heck?

"Controversial" albums have been with us for a long time. Last I checked, none of them led to people overthrowing the government or becoming serial killers, but then again I'm not the kind of guy who thinks "Helter Skelter" by the Beatles should be held accountable for the Charles Manson murders. I do think the Disney Corporation should be charged with something for giving the world Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake.

Here is a random spattering of albums that once caused older people to have their blood pressure medicine adjusted.

10) The Beatles--Yesterday And Today: Pictures of the Fab Four sitting around in butcher smocks with bloody meat on their laps? You can practically feel western civilization declining if this got out to the general public.

9) John Lennon & Yoko Ono--Two Virgins: Personally, I don't want to see these two naked (as they appeared on the album's cover), either. And I sure don't want to listen to their  self-indulgent album. But putting it in a brown paper bag only makes it more attractive to people who like to own things in brown paper bags. Have you hugged a wino lately?

8) Nirvana--In Utero: In order to make Wal-Mart happy, Nirvana changed "Rape Me" to "Waif Me." Is this true? They also altered the back cover of the album to eliminate the fetuses that apparently also bother people. I didn't even know anyone looked at the back of an album.

7) Blind Faith--Blind Faith: Young naked girls like the one on this album's cover before puberty wouldn't even be considered OK for album-cover art today. But back in the late '60s and early '70s people were more likely not to care, since there really weren't as many places to fake your "moral outrage" and people were mostly too stoned to care.

6) Jane's Addiction--Ritual De Lo Habitual: One cover was "too controversial" because of nudity. So, the "clean cover" contained the text of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which for those unfamiliar declares we have the right to "bear words" against our neighbor.

5) John Mellencamp--Mr. Happy Go Lucky: Wal-Mart insisted he airbrush out an angel and demon from the cover of his album. Now we're really talking picky. What next? I" don't like the color of your wife's dress on the album cover. Please have her choose a more suitable hue"?

4) Dead Kennedys--Frankenchrist: These guys went to court over a poster included inside the album by noted artist H.R. Giger. Granted, the artwork in question--that of decrepit sexual nature--might not be to everyone's taste, but I don't imagine anyone who buys an album by a band called the Dead Kennedys is likely to be disturbed by such imagery and may even in fact secretly crave such things. Do you go to fast food restaurants for your health?

3) Guns N' Roses--Lies: Their debut album Appetite For Destruction (and other ditties) had its album cover replaced due to its graphic sexual/violent nature, but it was this extended EP with the song "One In A Million" that caused quite a stir, since Axl doesn't seem to like foreigners and homosexuals very much. Sounds like a lot of people I hear screaming on AM radio. Which is why I switched to FM years ago.

2) 2 Live Crew--As Nasty As They Wanna Be: They ended up recording "Banned In The U.S.A." because that's exactly what happened. This wonderful album, As Nasty As They Wanna Be, was deemed offensive and illegal and a record store owner was thrown in jail for selling a copy to an undercover police officer. Great to see law enforcement being used to protect the people. Now will someone from the police department come over and smack my annoying neighbor?

1) Sheryl Crow--Sheryl Crow: Sheryl Crow refused to alter this lyric: "Watch our children as they kill each other with a gun they bought at Wal-Mart discount stores" and was subsequently not allowed to sell her album at Wal-Mart Discount Stores. I can kinda see the point here from both sides. People who told me they didn't like my mom were never allowed back into my house. I'm just surprised that anyone at Wal-Mart would even notice such a thing. I bet somebody brought it to Mr. Wal-Mart's attention, unless he was already a huge Sheryl Crow fan, at which point he must've been mighty disappointed that Sheryl didn't share his enthusiasm for gun-selling.

Nice to be reminded that Guns-n-Roses were once considered controversial....Also nice to be reminded that there was once a REAL Guns-n-Roses......

The original cover for Jimi Hendrix -"Electric Ladyland" had several nude women on it. It was the late sixties, so it was immediately banned.

Wal-Mart censors should be banned from their own stores. What a bunch of self righteous, hypocritical morons!!

4. MsSchadenfreude -
No that wasn't true Rob...made me chuckle. Wal-Mart is such a stiff, go Target. To a point anyway :p

5. Yahoo! Music User -
Overkill put out an album called !!F*** You!! and the cover featured a hand flipping the middle finger in the air. Hunh....I wonder why that would upset people?......Guess we will never know for certain....

There was a big hoo-hah about the cover for Three Dog Night's HARD LABOR album. The cover later had a huge Band-Aid on it to cover the 'disturbing' image . You know some folks have no lives when 3DN offends them. Sheesh!

Good for artists that have stood up and said "No Way!" to Wal-Mart. This is exactly why I don't buy CD's at Wal-Mart, any CD whether I think it's likely the content would be altered or not. I'm 30 years old, I don't need Wal-Mart to tell me what swear words are okay for me to hear. And as a parent it is MY responsibility to decide what is too much for my child, not Wal-Mart's. I don't get this, they sell MA rated video games and R rated movies, why has music been singled out??? They can't say it's so they don't accidentally sell to underagers, because they still have to worry about that with video games and movies. This is just ridiculous.

Hey you forgot " lets get physical" by Olivia NewtonJohn. It was banned from the airwaves and MTV for sexual content. I must admit though seeing fat sweaty guys trying to exercise was hard on the eyes.

Hey Rob, you left out Spinal Tap's "Smell the Glove"!!! That one should have been number 11!!!

As a Dead Kennedys fan, I must concur Rob.

Great list! Remember back in the 80's when religious right's told you listening to Ozzy Osbourne, Motley Crue or Alice Cooper meant you would become a devil worshipper? LOL! Oh, and dont play Stairway to Heaven backwards.....you remember! Ah, those were the days!

It really wasn't about Adams sexuality was, nor weather he wore nail polis and eye liner, he was as sexy as sexy gets. Adam you rocked my world, and I love you!!!!!!
Hey Clay I know you are GAY, so whats up with you?????
Adam, you have beautiful eyes!!!!!

Let's remember that you don't have to win AI to be the winner overall. In the end it will most likely be Adam Lambert signing the biggest contract and having longevity in in the business. Kris, I was shocked to see make it to the end over Danny who is an amazing talent. Kris is totally forgetable. No great stage presence, nothing truly amazing about his voice that sets him apart from someone who sings solos at church on Sunday. Not to worry about Adam. He will go on to do great things and we can all buy his CD soon, I'm sure.

The real controversy surrounding an G & R album would be rather or not you could consider Axle's singing music!

I'm with racer39girl, I'm 41 and I remember well the things people said and society tried to put on us to make us think if we did certain things or listened to certain music we'd turn evil. COME ON!!!!!! Give me a freaking break. And Walmart can kiss my ass, they have no right to censor anything. If you do it to one thing you should do it to all. So what's all this freedom of speech I keep hearing about, when does that start?????????

I don't like the edited music, and prefer the originals, but I do understand that some people may not like certain things in their music, or their children's music. It is good that There is a place where you can buy this music. However, other than one f-bomb that Green Day used, I don't see anything wrong with their album. In fact, it is better in subject matter and language than their last album. I am kinda glad that they chose not to alter their music, and left it in it's original form.

Wow, I see Walmart mentioned a lot in here.

Why on earth would anybody shop for music at Wal-Mart anyway? (I don't shop there at all, but that has nothing to do with this.)

Why should you spend your money in a place that wants to tell you what you can listen to or what cover art you should have. I appreciate the artists that don't knuckle under to them.

ok. i buy clothes at walmart and buy lots of things at walmart. i like walmart because its cheap, except for one isle: the music isle. unless i think i can get an album exactly how it was originally in that isle, i wont buy it there.
