On the Road With JamBase: Colour Revolt

Posted Thu Apr 3, 2008 5:50pm PDT by Aaron Kayce in On the Road With JamBase
Drawing comparisons to Modest Mouse and the Pixies for their angular, guitar-driven indie-rock, Colour Revolt are on the rise. With their full-length debut, Plunder, Beg And Curse, having just been released (April 1) on Fat Possum Records, the band has already secured a tour opening for alterna-rock legends the Breeders (dates available here). Although Colour Revolt finds inspiration in what's come before them, they aren't ripping anyone off. The fact that the band took their name from 19th century theologian and author Edwin Abbott's Flatland speaks to where the band's collective conscious is. Underneath the searing guitars and screaming vocals are deep, dark thoughts that often pull from the rich history of their Oxford, Mississippi home.

Name: Patrick Addison
Band(s): Colour Revolt
Instrument(s): Bass
Nicknames: Pooch
Place You Call Home: Oxford, MS
Album you always take on tour: Bob Dylan - Desire

What would someone always find in your van or tour bus? What supplies don't you leave home without?

We seem to always have a good amount of literature and CDs to listen to. We end up forgetting to bring stuff most of the time because we are always running late. Phone chargers are key, but we end up leaving those behind a lot also.

What personal rituals do you have to help keep your sanity while on tour?

I like to drive. It gives me something to do and I enjoy looking at the scenery. We kind of all have different things. We tend to become very sarcastic with our humor and then we go a bit insane, but we do it so that we stay sane. Kind of messed up, but yeah. I like to drive.

Speaking of rituals, does the band have a pre-show ritual to help prepare for the stage?

Not really, we don't think about it too much, just kind of get up there and do our thing. Sometimes we make a setlist, sometimes we don't. We like to hang out with people or have some drinks. We are a pretty laid back band for the most part.

Audiences come in all shapes and sizes. What's the screwiest fan encounter you've had?

We had an interviewer/fan draw us a picture of his interpretation of what we looked liked in his head before ever seeing pictures of us. It kind of came out crazy, and for some reason there was a soldier's head on a stick. He also talked about Lindsey Lohan's mom a lot.

What's a great, positive fan encounter you've had?

More positively, we had a fan at a show last week go speechless and freak out when she realized we were selling our CD ahead of the release date. She ran around the room for a while before finally getting the courage to purchase one. That was really awesome.

What's the strangest thing you've seen from the stage while performing?

I sure hope you know who Beatle Bob is. He's been to two of our shows and watching him dance and get into the show is one of the best things ever. We've had some fights in the crowd during our show which is always entertaining.

What's the first thing you like to do after a show?

Grab a whiskey drink. Tell the other guys good show.

Tell us about a great road food stop you've discovered in your travels.

Food is always an issue. You are bound to fast food a lot, which sucks, especially when you are vegetarian like me. In Texas we stop at Taco Cabana a good bit.

If I weren't a musician I'd probably be a (fill in the blank) because (fill in the blank).

If I weren't a musician I'd probably be a psychologist because that's what my degree is in.

(Fill In the Blank) are the baddest mothas on the planet.

Anteaters are the baddest mothas on the planet.

Your band mates will often reveal strange things about themselves during a tour. What stuff have your fellow musicians shown you that took you aback or delighted you?

We found out Sean left his toothbrush somewhere on tour and he had been using random ones that he had found at each place we stayed at. Sean is a bit of a neat freak sometimes so that was interesting since he found nothing wrong with it at all.

Name a few things we'd find on your rider.

Beer, Gatorade, Hummus, Airborne.

What was the musical highlight of your last or current tour and why?

At SXSW we were blown away that we had a great crowd of people for us. It really blows us away every time people show up to a show. We are just normal kids from Mississippi; the fact that people are digging what we do enough to pay money or travel to come see us blows our minds. So yeah, the highlight is people being at our shows, how is that not incredible that that happens.
