Rihanna's 'Wait Your Turn' Video – Dark And Inviting

Posted Tue Nov 3, 2009 1:19pm PST by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

Rihanna sounds sad and unstable on her comeback song "Russian Roulette." The lyrics are depressing, and the single gun shout sound effect that ends the song gives me chills. It makes me wonder if she is okay.

But she appears completely empowered in the video for her latest song, "Wait Your Turn," which premiered today on her website, RihannaNow.com. The black and white short has a dark edge. It feels like something that falls in between a desolate alley scene in a Batman movie and a vampire flick.

Watch the "Wait Your Turn" video on RihannaNow.com.

Though Rihanna has always embodied a strong and confident woman, the images she takes on in the "Wait Your Turn" video are intensified. She wears an eye patch. Her couture is juxtaposed with gritty backdrops. Her facial expressions are emotionless.

Mix with that with lyrics that tout her matter-of-fact disposition--"I pitch with a grenade, swing away if you're feeling brave" and "I'm such a f-king lady, you don't have to be afraid."

The "you don't have to be afraid" lyric surprises me. I thought she wanted us to be scared of this Rihanna who could convincingly portray the next new bad ass heroin.

But a closer listen to the verses reveals that she is more welcoming than her exterior suggests. She is essentially saying, Don't be intimated. Come join me and "together, we gone be taking over."

Closer to the end of the song she sings, "Damn, I'm glad I picked you, took a chance on love."

The video and song's mixed messages confuse me.

But maybe it's supposed to be like that cliché about the pit-bull with lipstick. You know, she might look tough out the outside, but she is still a little mushy in the center.

Rihanna's "Rated R" and first single "Russian Roulette" go on sale today.

Rihanna will address the Chris Brown assault later this week on "Good Morning America" and "20/20."

She is on some demonic stuff.....enuff said. You will see in her future, trust. And hers will continue to look darker and darker, but the thing is, she wants it that way. Its nothing wrong with her as far as her being crazy, she isnt. She is talking about her relationship with the darkside on this and other songs. The eye patch represents the all seeing left eye on the Egyptian Pyramid, and the sun god which she worships. That is the reason why it is confusing to you, its hidden messages. Someone may erase this, but hey, its the truth....I expect it!

I think that she is a very good artist. Some of her Lyrics are a little confusing. I get the feeling that there is more going on with her besides the incident between her and Chris Brown. She is dealing with some major issues that no one knows about.I have been in the same situation and never told a soul, but I came up from it. I was just as guilty as he was. Abuse happens in all kinds of ways. No body has the right to abuse any one in any way. I hope and pray that both Rihanna and Chris can grow from that terrible moment and help others find there way.

I love her but I also think that she going out of her way to keep putting that image up as she is the victim. While I do not in any way agree with what Chris did at some point playing the victim will only get you so far. She doesn't have to re create her image to america he does. She is an amazing artist and when her CD is released I will be in line for it. But I think she needs to return back to the old Riri where her music made you wanna dance and feel it in ur soul not cry and run to the police. You people may not agree but that is my opinion.

For all those that think this is some 'dark side', evil, fallen angel thing.. get over it!! Its sooooo not! This girl (and her marketing team) knows how to get people's attention. Between creating gritty images in her videos (take note of all the popular vampire-based shows recently) and doing interviews about her ordeal on the eve of her album release, all of this is just plain smart selling strategies. The song is edgy, different, out-of-the-box; the look says "I've done some growing up"; the song's lyrics are meant to throw people off; as far as I'm concerned, its all brilliant! You Go Girl (and her Production Team)... watch her album fly off the shelves and y'all gonna be getting that ring tone!!! Oh and I'm Biggin Up the reggae stylized language in the song too!
