'Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' Musical Director Says Singer Was 'Our Friend'

Posted Thu Oct 29, 2009 6:06pm PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

"Michael Jackson's This Is It" Musical Director Michael Bearden said it was difficult pulling together the documentary styled film in just four months since the King Of Pop's death on June 25.

"Michael was not just our boss, he was our friend," Bearden said in an exclusive interview with Yahoo! Music. He added that they approached making the movie with Michael, his children, and fans in mind.

Bearden dismissed the notion that the late icon surrounded himself with mindless "yes people" who simply followed his orders and never offered input. In the film which opened in theatres Tuesday, Bearden and Michael are captured discussing how to structure songs.

Watch my video interview with Michael Bearden to get more insight on his work on "Michael Jackson's This Is It."

Before beginning working with Michael, Bearden requested that he deal directly with the "Thriller" singer, as opposed to an assistant.

"Michael had no problem with that," Bearden revealed. The two did not always agree on ideas, but developed an approach to settling their differences.

One of the highlights of the film is Michael's performance of "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" with Judith Hill, a newcomer and "This Is It" background singer. Judith made news in July when she performed Michael's "Heal The World" at his memorial.

The chemistry between the two singers is as good as Michael's version with Siedah Garrett that appears on his 1987 album "Bad." Judith is completely confident, singing next to Michael. They wrap the song with chilling impromptu, gospel ad-libs.

Nearly every other performance in the film is a compilation of various takes, but this one is a single, continuous shot.

Surprisingly, Bearden reveals that the "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" performance was taped on the first day Michael and Judith met.

THIS IS IT is SUPER WORTH THE MONEY! I watched it in IMAX and the movie is unbelievably fascinating and entertaining. A really feel-good movie about the true genius that is Michael Jackson. If you want to know how and why Michael REMAINS the most successful recording artist in the world for 45 years straight and counting--watch THIS IS IT. Truly 2 THUMBS UP! Lives up and beyond the raves that all the reknowned critics have showered it with--a STAGGERING A+++++ docu-movie! Even the children watching it in the cinema I went to visibly enjoyed it with their parents.

THIS IS IT is a fantastic movie. Absolutely WORTH THE MONEY! I watched it at IMAX. It is unbelievably fascinating and entertaining to watch a genius put together the elements of what would have been the BEST Concert ever. It is a feel-good movie, lots of funny and cute scenes from everyone involved in the whole production. This movie answers the age old question on WHAT MAKES MICHAEL JACKSON THE MOST SUCCESSFUL RECORDING ARTIST and PERFORMER IN WORLDWIDE HISTORY (as per Guinness)? How did he remain as big and as famous as he is for 45 years and counting? Watch the movie and KNOW the answer. MUST-SEE! Totally lives up to the hype and to the GLOWING RAVE REVIEWS from reknowned critics who unanimously gave it an A rating. Its very deserving! Both children and adults who watched it in the cinema I went to visibly enjoyed the film. 2 Thumbs Up!

If you didn't see the movie you really shouldn't judge it M.Vick. Didn't your mother every teach you if you didn't have anything nice to say, not to say anything at all!!!!. So.... be SILENT!!!!!!!!

Just saw the movie today. Brought me to tears. How anyone can think this man ever touched a child inappropriately is beyond me. I am definitely going to see this again during the week, an afternoon show.

It's so surreal...he was a gift to world..taken to soon. But maybe it was best it ended this way. He was a very misunderstood, confused soul. Underappreciated, now the world can see the injustice we did him.

He must be smiling down on us all. Knowing finally how much he was truly loved.

I loved the movie!!! I was amazed how technologically advanced that concert would have been!!! This concert would have definitely been MJ comeback!!! He was truly a musical genius and his music and videos will live on FOREVER!!! I have loved MJ since I was a little girl and still do today!! The movie brought tears to my eyes to see how passionate and gifted MJ was!! GREAT MOVIE!! I know he is teaching the angels how to dance!!! Love u MJ!!!

MJ, you were a gift from God. He took you away from this cruel world. I've seen many movies, and the Earth Song scene was one of the most beautiful images on the silver screen. Profit is pointless here, quality and soul are the most important factors in this movie.

When I walked out of the movie theatre, I felt that the movie wasn't about Michael's comeback or anything of that sort. What they wanted to do was show how much of a musical genius MJ was. He knew every note of every song and made it perfection. Two things that really caught me the most was that MJ wasn't just putting himself in the spotlight. He let his dancers, singers, and even his guitarist have their moment in that spotlight. Also, as the movie went on, I started to become angry because I saw how healthy the man looked. He was ALWAYS skinny, so it wasn't a shocker. He was like a 30 year old when he performed. I totally don't believe anything I've heard about his death at all (except for the medicine that killed him). It didn't look like he was a horrible addict or anything. He couldn't sleep. Whoopie. Don't we all have that problem sometimes? I'm not taking the blame away from him, but I am starting to look at the doctor more and more. He should have known that dosage was lethal when he gave it to him. Even though it shouldn't have been done under any circumstance, if he had just listened to MJ when he said give him the propofol only, he would most likely be alive!

The movie was great!!!! He was such a compassionate person!!! All the HATERS need to get a life!!!!

I watched the movie and it is a 'feel good movie'. It's good to see Michael singing and dancing. I would recommend it to everyone including the haters. Haters, go see this movie and you will become better people.

i think this movie should be taken out of theaters and u could buy it or w/e i dont care, the man is gone, you people need to wake up and realize it, people are trying to cash in on his death. if you all "loved" him like you say you do, then leave him alone. his kids are left with the memory and love of him. so let him go. dont you realize? when you sit here and create all this buzz on him and everything, you make his name come up on the radio, on the tv, in magazines. those poor kids have to suffer because some hypocrites want to pretend he is still here. before he died, i bet half of you who went to see his "movie" called him names, said he was guilty of molestation and all this other crap. i choose to remember MJ from 60's to the 80's. seriously. you guys are kind of sad, to sit there and defend him like the way you do. Did you know him? did you talk to him? no neither did i, he was a celebrity, he bleached his skin, was bald, had so much plastic surgery, and you expect people not to make fun of him? seriously? the dude had mental problems, sorry but its true. he had alot of abuse as a child, and he tried to live that childhood as an adult. BUT THAT'S WRONG!!!! you dont do that. who buys a monkey and sleeps in bed with kids(that you don't even know!!!!) but enough of my rants. all i will say is this, wake up people, theres alot more worse things than MJ dying. I lost my grandfather this summer, he was a WW2 vet. he is a man i will cry for. not your fallen god you people idolize. email me at kornkid21@yahoo.com if you have any replies
