About an hour into last night's Tony Awards, I realized I was watching the American Music Awards. There were more chorus dancers and costumes at last night's AMAs than "Cats."

Cornball theatrics has replaced musical intensity as the new musical de rigueur. Can't anyone just sing a damn song? Does every performance need to be a lip-synched Broadway musical? In fact, more actors sing live on Broadway than musicians do at music shows.
