The Only VMAs Category That Matters

Posted Tue Aug 4, 2009 12:18pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in And The Winner Is...

So today the MTV Video Music Awards nominations were announced, with all the usual suspects: Beyonce, Eminem, Kanye, and of course Britney Spears (whose newly retoned derriere is still being kissed by MTV after the network threw her under the bus at the 2007 ceremony). Yawn. Same awards, different year.

But there is one added category that has grabbed my imagination: Best Video (That Should Have Won A Moonman). This category actually reminds me of the days when MTV played music videos, and this category will hypothetically right past VMA wrongs. Finally, here's the chance for videos that were snubbed at past awards ceremonies to get their due.

Since Muse's "Knights Of Cydonia" (THE BEST VIDEO OF ALL TIME) is not nominated in this category, sadly, my vote personally goes to the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage"--which in 1994 ridiculously lost out in ALL CATEGORIES, mostly to the awesome-but-not-nearly-AS-awesome Alicia Silverstone vehicle "Cryin'" by Aerosmith and R.E.M's subtitled existentialist mini-movie "Everybody Hurts."

This shutout so angered Beastie Adam Yauch's lederhosened alter ego, Nathaniel Hornblower, that Nathaniel famously bumrushed the stage during Michael Stipe's typically PC speech, yodeling, "This is an outrage! This is a farce!" over the injustice that "Sabotage" mastermind Spike Jonze had lost in the Best Direction category. And I was totally Team Nathaniel that night. Spike should have won.

So "Sabotage" triumphing in the VMAs' new, better-late-than-never category would certainly make amends for this undeserved snub. Plus, since Adam Yauch is currently (successfully) battling cancer, I can think of no better way to support Adam than to have him put on his vintage Hornblower lederhosen and let him accept the trophy that he and his bandmates should have won 15 years ago.

That being said, here are all the Best Video (That Should Have Won A Moonman) nominees--almost all of them better than most of the videos nominated in the major VMA categories this year:

I'm perplexed that none of those videos won any Moonmen... I honestly can't pick which one to vote for. It's a five-way tie between Freedom, Into the Great Wide Open, Sabotage, Here it Goes Again and California Girls.

Radiohead, Beastie Boys, U2 and Ok Go should have easily won their years...to a lesser extent so should have Foo Fighters and Dr. Dre. All classic videos that show the quality of choice in MTV.

3. Yahoo! Music User -
Or lack thereof.

To me, the best video there is OK Go's. I'm not a fan of theirs (this is the only song of theirs I even know), but that video is incredible! While I do like U2, WTSHNN is pretty much just a concert-on-a-building video, a la "Let It Be". Yawn. Tom Petty, George Michael and DLR are the only ones I'd even have an interest in seeing - and I have.

MTV was the channel to watch when I was young. It started a phenomenon of waching music instead of just listening to it. The first video was "Video Killed the Radio Star" and the video that changed all music videos was "Thriller" without a doubt. I am 52 and I wached MTV all the time when it first came on,but now I don't watch it at all because there is hardly any music on just redicules shows. Not that most of the music out there today is worth watching or listening to,but, MTV stands for Music Television Videos,so let's see more videos on MTV.

Everlong, I think, should have won a "Moonman" in 1997, but what I think is that it is a tie between Everlong and the OK GO song "Here it goes again." What do you think?

The video for here it goes again is so awesome and clever. I love when they work on each treadmill and it looks like they are ice skating! It is so awesome and I wish that I could try it! That is probably one of the best videos I have ever seen!!!

Karma Police is really great, but I'd have to go for Sabotage

I had never seen the Knights of Cydonia video before, and I have to agree that it is a great video. It should get some award.

Where is "Buddy Holly" by Weezer? "Learn to Fly" by Foo Fighters? "Jizz In My Pants" and "Dick In A Box"?

You, whore, do not know what you're doing.

And who are the Knights of Chlamydia anyway?

Kenya West shows just what the black community needs, his intelligent that he displayed on the VMA’s. For him to come out and do what he did was just outrageous and was an embracement to the black community. What’s really irritating me is that BET is not denouncing what he did on National Television, it appears that you are supporting him for his drunken onstage embarrassing move that he displayed on stage. Way to go BET and keep it up, it appears that BET is as ignorant as Mr. West.

For tenor from Malta, a star-making role?

AP
Thu Nov 26, 2009 12:01am PST

AP - There's something about the honeyed sweetness of Joseph Calleja's voice that seems to evoke memories of a golden age, as if this young tenor carried within his vocal cords a secret passed down from bygone generation… More »
